Gavin Newsom admits he has an eye on a 2028 presidential run, and the sad thing is: The California governor might be the best Democrats can manage.
Unlike ex-Veep Kamala Harris and others (Pete Buttigieg), he can pretend he was unaware of President Joe Biden’s sagging faculties without triggering open laughter.
Unlike Pennsylvania’s Gov. Josh Shapiro, he’s toed the far-left regularly enough to (perhaps) be acceptable to the party’s base, who may find running a white male non-socialist acceptable if it can get them back to power.
Newsom’s also put some effort into seeming quasi-moderate: In California, he’s vetoed a far-left bill or three nearly every year to signal his “reasonableness,” but the fake moderation barely runs skin-deep.
The horrors of Los Angeles’ Figueroa Street, for example, have now made national news: The red-light district sprawls along dozens of blocks, lined with preteen girls in lingerie, many plucked from the foster-care system, pimped out by cold-blooded traffickers — so openly that the area is now known as the “Kiddie Stroll.”
And Newsom bears prime responsibility, having signed the obscenely misnamed “Safer Streets for All Act” in 2022, which banned cops from arresting suspected prostitutes for loitering — and so removing a key tool for police to rescue kids dragooned into the sex trade.
He’s such a phony, as in a recent podcast where he cast his upbringing as a scrappy school-of-hard-knocks, claimed he grew up on “Wonder Bread” and “mac and cheese” and his mother “hustled” to pay bills, “grinding every single day” and working “two and a half jobs” while sports got him “into college.”
All bull: His mom might’ve work a few menial gigs post-divorce, but his father was a massively successful lawyer who managed the finances of the billionaire Getty family, which has sponsored Newsom for his entire “business” and political career.
In an early bout of podcast fakery, he told the late Charlie Kirk that he saw transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports as “deeply unfair” and admitted to Shawn Ryan that Democrats’ position on gender reassignments for minors is a “major problem” for the party.
But he’s never actually taken a firm stand that would upset the Dem base on either front.
He’s slammed President Donald Trump for not being a better role model, while calling him a “son of a bitch” in the same breath; he’s criticized his party for focusing on “personality” over substance, while trolling online with Trump-like social-media posting.
He’s said Democrats need to make clear what they “stand for,” while he shapeshifts by the hour, decrying wokeism in one interview and then saying that “anti-woke stuff is just anti-black” in another.
He clearly expects the left-leaning national media to cover for his contradictions and for his failures from Figueroa to the Los Angeles wildfires, to hide how the Golden State is falling apart on his watch, as residents flee high taxes, high cost of living and plummeting quality of life.
The servile California media have made that easier for their national comrades, but Newsom’s in for an unpleasant surprise on that front.
It’s about to get a lot harder for Greasy Gavin to sell his the snake oil.
