“VOX POPULI, VOX DEI,” cheered Elon Musk after the Continuing Resolution he’d spent all Wednesday trashing became a dead letter: Basically, the voice of the people has spoken.
OK, Elon: What’s your legislative strategy now?
Because everyone advising President-elect Donald Trump needs to be figuring out the plan come Jan. 20 for turning this country around.
Was torpedoing this bill a plus for that agenda?
Yes, the CR was awful, but the new bill Speaker Mike Johnson introduced — including the debt-limit expansion demanded by President-elect Donald Trump — was shot down by the House. The way forward is now unclear.
We’re not particularly worried about a “government shutdown” here: Uncle Sam’s essential services will keep working even if this doesn’t get resolved for weeks.
But a standoff prolonged into next year will gum up the start of the actual Trump administration, and potentially sideline whatever the new team wants Congress to do in its early months.
And that’s what the braintrust down in Mar-a-Lago needs to prioritize right now: Getting its people into place with plans for major reform — plus policies that can immediately spur economic growth and counter the inflation still programmed in by the Biden team.
Despite a paper-thin House majority, Republicans need to use their control of the White House and Congress to deliver for the American people in time for the 2026 midterm elections — not least so they can increase their House ranks, rather than see Dems take control and block the GOP agenda.
That’s going to require firm and steady leadership — not grenade-throwing or pointless posturing about the sausage factory.
Johnson’s done a tremendous job as speaker, herding the cats of the Republican caucus (you try needing Marjorie Taylor Greene on every vote!) even as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has done his best to divide the GOP — and to push an entire year’s worth of work on funding the federal government into the final days before Christmas so he could get another CR monster.
Bigfooting the speaker may have worked out this time, but it shouldn’t have to come to that — Johnson’s not to blame for any failure of communications.
Team Trump’s mission is to bring a new dawn in America.
Sometimes, making that happen will mean Elon Musk needs to keep it in his pants.
