The Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) says four of its officers were treated at local hospitals following an attack by an inmate at the Rush City prison Saturday.
Staff were conducting routine cell searches around 3:20 p.m. when they encountered an inmate who was suspected of possessing homemade alcohol, or βhooch.β When officers approached, the inmate assaulted staff with a shank.
According to a DOC news release, one officer sustained a puncture wound and was transported to a local hospital. At the time of the release, the officer was undergoing treatment for non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to fully recover.
Three other officers, who subdued and restrained the inmate, were later transported to the hospital by state vehicle. These officers have since been evaluated and released.
Following the assault, the facility was placed on lockdown, and the inmate responsible is being transferred to the DOCβs maximum-security facility in Oak Park Heights, the press release said.
The area where the attack occurred will remain on lockdown through the weekend, but the rest of the facility resumed normal operations Saturday night.
The DOCβs Office of Special Investigations is investigating the incident. When completed, the case will be referred to the Chisago County Attorneyβs Office for review and consideration of felony assault charges.
The inmate responsible for the assault is serving a life sentence for first-degree murder, and he has been housed at MCF-Rush City since his sentencing. The DOC release did not identify the inmate by name.
βThis senseless act of violence serves as a stark reminder of the dangers correctional staff face every day in service to public safety,β said DOC Commissioner Paul Schnell. βWe are grateful for the swift and courageous actions of our staff, and we are providing them the care and support they need. We will pursue every available remedy to hold the assailant accountable for this cowardly attack.β
