The State of Illinois has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, alleging federal agents used unlawful and dangerous tactics during Operation Midway Blitz.
The lawsuit was filed by Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and is supported by Gov. JB Pritzker. It challenges what the state describes as federal overreach by the Trump administration, claiming agents exceeded authority granted by Congress.
The suit alleges agents arrested people without warrants or probable cause, used tear gas indiscriminately and carried out enforcement actions that violated the law.
“We have watched in horror as unchecked federal agents have aggressively assaulted and terrorized our communities and neighborhoods in Illinois, undermining constitutional rights and threatening public safety,” Pritzker said in a statement. “In the face of the Trump administration’s cruelty and intimidation, Illinois is standing up against the attacks on our people. Today, Illinois is once again taking Donald Trump to court to hold his administration accountable for their unlawful tactics, unnecessary escalations, and flagrant abuses of power.”
According to the lawsuit, federal immigration laws have been enforced in Illinois for decades without disrupting public order or safety.
A press release from the state alleges that conditions changed with the launch of Operation Midway Blitz, an immigration enforcement operation in Chicagoland.
