From the right: Don Just Changed the Future
βIn the case of the Middle East what Trump said about himself is true,βΒ marvels Commentaryβs John Podhoretz. βHe said he doesnβt start wars. Trump said he ends warsβ β and Saturday night βwas Trump ending this evil war of Iranβs, either right now or after more pain causes the mullahs to cry uncle. For Israel didnβt start this war either. It was launched, by Iran and its catamites, on Oct. 7.β The strikeβs βimpact is potentially so enormous, and so world-historic, we neednβt rush into interpreting its larger meaning.β But: βTrump has said since the assassination attempt in Butler, Pa., that he believes God spared him for a reason. And now, so do I.β
Conservative: Kill the Suicide Bill
Gov. Hochul should veto βThe Medical Aid in Dying Act, which passed the State Assembly in April,β andΒ βwould allow people diagnosed with terminal illnesses to request a prescription for lethal drugs,βΒ urges City Journalβs John Hirschauer. Besides moving to βeffectively recognize suicide as a human right,β βthe bill has relatively few safeguards,β as βit does not require that the person requesting the drugs be psychiatrically evaluated.β βAnd the billβs drafters declined to include a residency requirement,β meaning people from across the country could come to New York and euthanize themselves. βHuman life is marked by terrible suffering.β βBut once the state decides that anyone, on account of illness, has the βrightβ to kill himself, it has decided that suffering can render lifeΒ worthless.β
Liberal: UFT Winning Mayoral Primary
New York schools are βworse todayβ despite βan incredible $36,000 spent per pupil β about twice the national average β with National Assessment of Educational Progress scores of 28% proficient in reading and a few points more in math,βΒ grumbles Joe Klein at Substack. One problem: Teachers, like other city workers, are βunable to be fired.β Although education βis the absolute key to future success for New York,β it βhasnβt been much discussed in the Democratic mayoral primary.β In a Manhattan Institute report, all of the candidates βreceived Dβs and Fβs, except oneβ β Whitney Tilson, βan obscure Wall Street moderateβ despised by the teachers union. The UFT hasnβt endorsed any candidate, likely due to its βutter confidence that the winner will abide by its wishes.β
From the right: LAΒ NeededΒ Trumpβs Help
βGov. Gavin Newsom told Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that local law enforcement officers were βsufficient to maintain orderβ β in Los Angeles, yet LAPD officers tellΒ Heather Mac Donald at The Wall Street Journal, βWe donβt have sβ under control.β She cites numerous instances of violence that, by βsheer luck,β werenβt life-threatening. βShouldΒ Trump have waited to see if the localsβ would eventually control the situation? The answerβs clear: βPolice ChiefΒ Jim McDonnell put the LAPD on tactical alertβ and canceled all time off. Yet days later, MayorΒ Karen BassΒ nonetheless had to order a curfew. βStill the disorder continued.β Fact is, βThere is more danger from toleratingβ lawlessness than from responding to it βwith all legal means.β
Libertarian: Cut the F-35
βAs the U.S. grapples with ballooning federal budgets and increasingly necessary spending cuts, the military remains ripe for austerity,βΒ blares Joe Lancaster at Reason. The F-35 jet is a perfect example of a βprogram that deserves to be scrapped.β Since its inception after 9/11, βthe jet has proven itself not ready from prime time, both more expensive and less functional than promised.βΒ Too bad βthe House Appropriations Committeeβs proposed Defense Appropriations Bill for 2026 would spend $8.5 billion on F-35s,β and βPresident Donald Trump has called the F-35 βthe greatest fighter jet in the world.ββΒ βThe F-35 means to replace previous-generation aircraft like the F-16, but instead, the obsolete models are running circles around their intended replacement.β Every new thing we hear about the F-35, βproves that itβs long past time to kill the program.β
