Netflix is planning to buy Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) and the reason should be clear enough. If the acquisition goes through, Netflix will take control of a giant slice of the entertainment industry.
The company is expected to control at least 30 percent of the streaming market once the merger is complete. The deal is one of the largest of its kind in history and worth an estimated $83 billion.
Yet beyond concerns over corporate power, there’s another important reason to oppose this merger. Netflix is one of the wokest corporations in America and its possible expansion should galvanize conservatives. Stopping this merger would be a major cultural win for the right, signaling to woke Hollywood that it can’t continue to write off the concerns of middle America.
The good news is it looks like Warner Bros. may finally be listening.
As of last week, following months of political and legal pressure, Warner Bros. Discovery is now negotiating with companies other than Netflix. This follows Netflix approving a seven-day pause in its impending takeover of WBD, allowing Warner Bros. some breathing room.
Whatever happens next, Netflix can’t be allowed to win. If the streaming powerhouse were to buy WBD, it would gain a massive footprint over not just streaming but content production. No longer limited to in-house shows like Stranger Things, it would take control of the entire Warner Bros.
small and silver screen empire.
This would allow it to enforce its political views onto all that content. Purchasing WBD would turn Netflix into a woke behemoth.
Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt warned at a recent hearing that Netflix has created some of the “wokest content in the history of the world.” Even worse is how much of its programming for kids includes gender theory nonsense.
One study from the Concerned Women for America found that an astounding 41 percent of Netflix’s kids content includes LGBTQ themes, ranging from gay characters to storylines that reference “alternative lifestyles.” Much of this content was “explicit,” with 24 percent of TV-Y content falling into this category.
“It is also worth noting that ‘reboots’ of older series, or later seasons of long running series frequently introduced LGBTQ characters where none existed before,” the study observed.
Missouri Senator Josh Hawley has drawn attention to this propaganda.
“My personal experience is that my three children, I can’t let them watch anything on Netflix,” he told Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos at a recent Senate hearing on the proposed merger. “I can’t let them watch anything on Netflix unless I preview it because I don’t have confidence in what is on your platform. I don’t know what they’re going to encounter.”
It’s not just gender theory. Netflix is also deeply committed to DEI. Ever since 2018 when it hired its first “vice president of inclusion,” Netflix has made DEI a priority, with the company boasting about how its workforce is now minority-white and its programming has more diversity than the industry standard.
While many American corporations have started to move away from DEI, Netflix resolutely defended it to shareholders last year. “We work to build diversity, inclusion and equity into all aspects of our operations globally, with the goal of having diversity and inclusion function as a critical lens through which each Netflix employee carries out their role,” the streaming giant said in a statement.
If Netflix were to acquire Warner Bros., it would gain access to such beloved properties as Batman, Superman, Looney Tunes, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter. Those brands could end up tarnished by DEI- and LGBTQ-obsessed sequels and remakes.
It’s important for conservatives to flex their power in the cultural sphere. Boycotting Bud Light over a promotion by a trans influencer sent a strong message to corporate America. No longer can corporations disrespect conservative values and expect no harm to their bottom line. The right can do the same here with Netflix.
It’s not in our interest to allow Netflix to gain a monopoly over the entertainment industry and force woke ideology onto millions of viewers. Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent should be in the hands of a company that respects Middle Americans and their values.
That company is definitely not Netflix. Warner Bros. should keep that in mind as it keeps its options open.
