POLITICS: Gaza protests against Hamas are a sign of hope — and proof Israel’s military campaign is working

Any way you cut it, the demonstrations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip are a rare and hopeful sign.

Hundreds of Gazans took to the streets Tuesday, and thousands on Wednesday, to demand Hamas’ ouster — with growing calls on social media to take to the streets to protest the misery the terrorists have brought.

“Down with Hamas,” they chanted.

“Stop the war.”

“Release the hostages.”

“We want to live.”

So much for the terror group’s claims that Gazans long for martyrdom.

Yes, Gazans originally elected Hamas and cheered the terrorists’ Oct. 7, 2023, slaughterfest; some took part in it.

Plenty of civilians showed up for Hamas’ cruel hostage-release rallies; most likely despise Israel’s existence after decades of propaganda to that effect.

But some are plainly realizing that Hamas isn’t a solution to anything.

Its refusal to surrender and release the hostages, despite all these months of war and the suffering it inflicts on ordinary Gazans, exposes the terrorists’ contempt for “their” civilians, who tasted peace during the cease-fire.

“Hamas is demanding our people to remain steadfast,” says one protester. But “we’re dying and bleeding.” Hamas must “stop what is happening in Gaza” — “We reject the rule of Hamas.”

Maybe, just maybe, ordinary Gazans can help oust Hamas and end the hell they’ve suffered these long months.

More likely, the terrorists will rush out of their bunkers to slaughter dissenters and stamp out any uprising.

Perhaps, as part of Israel’s continued pressure on Hamas, the IDF will wind up deploying to protect the demonstrations.

And if residents don’t overthrow Hamas themselves, Israel will finish the job.

Nothing is guaranteed in the Middle East, of course.

But Israel now has a fully supportive US president in the White House, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains committed to eliminating the terrorist threat.

And now Gazans are starting to rise up in what could prove the beginning of Hamas’ end.
