Floridaβs Heartbeat Protection Act is proving a powerful shield for the unborn, rescuing nearly 300 precious lives from abortion every month since taking effect last year.
The law, which bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy when a babyβs heartbeat can be detected, has slashed abortions in Florida by nearly a third in its first year, according to the pro-abortion Guttmacher Instituteβs latest report.
βWe found 27% fewer abortions provided by clinicians in Florida comparing the first halves of 2024 and 2025,β said Isabel Docampo, a senior research associate at the Guttmacher Institute. That steep drop translates to about 12,000 fewer abortionsβdescribed by Docampo as βquite largeββmarking βthe largest absolute change that we observed in clinician-provided abortions in any stateβ during that period.

Pro-life leaders celebrated the figures as a testament to the heartbeat lawβs success in affirming the humanity of preborn children whose tiny hearts begin beating around six weeks. Based on birth data from the Sunshine State, the Heartbeat Protection Act is saving nearly 300 babies every month, a milestone that underscores the lawβs role in fostering a culture of life amid national declines.
Nationwide, abortions fell by about 5% in states without total bans in the first half of 2025 compared to the prior year, with Floridaβs pro-life protections credited as a key driver reducing abortions even among women traveling from neighboring Southern states.
Enacted in May 2024 following the U.S. Supreme Courtβs 2022 Dobbs decision that returned abortion to the states, the Heartbeat Protection Act replaced a prior 15-week limit and has withstood fierce legal challenges from abortion groups. Advocates point to the lawβs impact as evidence that protecting the vulnerable works, even as out-of-state travel for abortions has dipped 8% to 74,490 people in the first six months of 2025.
As Docampoβs research inadvertently highlights, the math is clear: 12,000 fewer tragedies in Florida alone mean 12,000 more stories of survival, resilience and joy.
