Federal agents were rammed and boxed in by multiple vehicles near a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Broadview, Illinois, early Friday morning, forcing them to open fire after one of the attackers brandished a firearm, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

“This morning, during routine patrolling in Broadview, in the same area of Chicago that law enforcement were assaulted yesterday, our brave law enforcement officers were rammed by vehicles and boxed in by 10 cars,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin announced in a social media post.

Agents trapped inside their vehicles were unable to move and forced to exit on foot. “One of the drivers who rammed the law enforcement vehicle was armed with a semi-automatic weapon. Law enforcement was forced to deploy their weapons and fire defensive shots at an armed U.S. citizen who drove herself to the hospital to get care for wounds,” McLaughlin said.

She confirmed the woman had previously been flagged by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as a security threat. “The armed woman was named in a @CBP intelligence bulletin last week for doxing agents and posting online, ‘Hey to all my gang let’s fk those mother f*ers up, don’t let them take anyone.’”

McLaughlin continued in her statement.

“Thankfully, no law enforcement officers were seriously injured in this attack.

“Pritzker’s Chicago Police Department is leaving the shooting scene and refuses to assist us in securing the area. There is a growing crowd and we are deploying special operations to control the scene. This is an evolving situation and we will give more information as soon as it becomes available,” she said.

The incident marks the latest escalation in a wave of violent anti-ICE protests that have gripped the Broadview area for weeks. Demonstrators have gathered nightly outside the facility, clashing with federal officers and attempting to block vehicle access to the property.

The Broadview facility is one of several ICE and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) locations nationwide that have faced repeated attacks in recent months. Agents say the nightly demonstrations have turned increasingly violent, often featuring coordinated tactics aimed at damaging vehicles and overwhelming law enforcement lines.

Several Democrat-aligned activists and candidates for an open House seat in the Chicago area, including Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss and progressive organizer Kat Abughazaleh, have been filmed participating in protests, blocking federal vehicles, and impeding agents. Legal experts say those actions could amount to federal felonies under statutes prohibiting obstruction of law enforcement operations.

Other protesters have hurled rocks, slashed tires, and vandalized federal vehicles, according to officials familiar with the situation. Agents have responded with non-lethal measures, including tear gas, pepper spray, and rubber bullets, but they have often been outnumbered by demonstrators.

In recent days, DHS has reinforced the Broadview site with additional personnel from multiple agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and U.S. Border Patrol. A large contingent of agents arrived last weekend, resulting in several arrests. Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino personally helped clear rioters from the facility’s main entrance, though protests resumed the following night.

The Chicago Police Department’s refusal to assist federal officers has drawn sharp criticism from DHS officials, who accuse city leaders of turning their backs on federal law enforcement during a dangerous confrontation. The agency has since deployed tactical teams to stabilize the area as a “growing crowd” continues to gather.

No federal agents were injured in Friday’s incident, and the armed woman who was shot remains hospitalized. Her condition has not been disclosed.
