POLITICS: ‘Enough is enough’: New York bishops call on state to support families, not abortion industry bailout – USSA News

The conference representing the New York Catholic bishops in public policy issues is criticizing Planned Parenthood for reportedly requesting $35 million in emergency state funding amid federal Medicaid freezes.

“The abortion industry in New York is looking increasingly like an irresponsible and spoiled adolescent, spending its generous allowance too fast,” Kristen Curran, director of government relations for the New York State Catholic Conference, said in an Aug. 6 statement

“New Yorkers should ask them: What happened to the $35 million you already got?” Curran said.

CatholicVote reported in August 2024 that the conference questioned the abortion giant’s use of state money after Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul allocated $35 million to subsidize abortion clinics in the state. Planned Parenthood of Greater New York announced it would close four clinics due to financial challenges and stop performing late-term abortions because of finances. At the time, Curran said that the news of the closures and end of late-term abortions “is a welcome relief” but it also “raises troubling questions for which taxpayers deserve answers.”

“If Planned Parenthood is now saying it’s too expensive to provide safe care to women in its clinics,” Curran said, “we must ask, Where exactly are these tens of millions of dollars going?”

In the Aug. 6 statement, Curran also criticized New York for using  taxpayers’ money to support abortion.

“Despite the many challenges facing New York, this year’s budget once again prioritized abortion, which really means Planned Parenthood,” Curran said. “Tens of millions of taxpayer dollars have been funneled to their organization in the last few years, yet the budget contained tens of millions more. These eye-popping figures were not enough to overcome Planned Parenthood’s financial mismanagement, which has led to closures and the reduction of services across the state, all before the Medicaid cuts.”

Taxpayer money should go toward positive initiatives such as supporting families and addressing the mental health crisis in the state, according to Curran.

“New York taxpayers should not be forced to prop up a clearly failing organization, especially one whose main business is terminating unborn lives,” Curran said. “Planned Parenthood is a bottomless pit of spending, to the detriment of the communities that truly need support. The State needs to direct these funds instead to working families, hungry children, the disabilities community and those struggling with mental health. Enough is enough.”
