The developers of ChatGPT released a report that stated people had 1.58 million conversations in the past year with the artificial intelligence technology that centered on help with everyday tasks. The high use came with risky situations such as energy demands to operate a data center, hospitalizations and in some cases, death, in just three years.

Researchers from OpenAI and Harvard University reviewed millions of conversations that people had with the chatbot in the past year, OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, said Monday. The website described it as the largest study of how people use and interact with the Large Language Model, saying that it creates economic value through productivity at work and personal benefits.

Unaffiliated researchers haven’t reviewed the study. It was published in the National Bureau of Economic Research, a private nonprofit that examines major economic issues.

“The findings show that consumer adoption has broadened beyond early-user groups,” OpenAI said, “shrinking the gender gap in particular; that most conversations focus on everyday tasks like seeking information and practical guidance; and that usage continues to evolve in ways that create economic value through both personal and professional use.”

On average, ChatGPT has more than 700 million weekly active users — about 8% of the world’s population.

Big Tech companies have banked on AI to become profitable. Still, Cathy Kunkel, a consultant at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, previously told Straight Arrow News that the companies are selling a financial forecast to investors that doesn’t align with reality. In OpenAI’s case, the company reported a $5 billion loss in 2024.

Despite the company being unprofitable, researchers did find that more people are using ChatGPT.

OpenAI released the large language model on Nov. 30, 2022, as a research preview and nearly a week later, it had more than one million weekly active users. It stayed on an upward trajectory as 100 million logged-in users were captured in 2023, followed by nearly 350 million in 2024 and as of July this year, more than 700 million users. That means about 8.6% of the world uses ChatGPT.

The chatbot can be used without requiring a login. However, researchers focused on people with accounts.

Tech companies are jumping at the chance to unveil their own artificial intelligence chatbots. Google launched Gemini in December 2023, while Microsoft’s Copilot launched in September 2023. Other manufacturers have caught on as Apple introduced Apple Intelligence into its Siri virtual assistant in October, and Amazon upgraded its virtual assistant Alexa in February.

“This widening adoption underscores our belief that access to AI should be treated as a basic right—a technology that people can access to unlock their potential and shape their own future,” OpenAI said in the release.

ChatGPT used more for personal reasons

Among the findings revealed in the study, researchers learned that as the chatbot’s usage doubled from 2024 to 2025, people started changing how they used the app.

The researchers found a 37.7% increase in messages not relating to work, and a 42.6% decrease in messages relating to work. They added that people sent 482.5% more messages in June 2025 than in June 2024. Messages were tallied by the millions.

As for what people used the app for, researchers categorized intentions of messages into seven topical groups: writing, practical guidance, technical help, multimedia, seeking information, self-expression and other/unknown.

Researchers found that approximately 77% of all nonwork-related conversations fell into the practical guidance, seeking information and writing categories.

“Practical Guidance has remained constant at roughly 29% of overall usage,” they wrote. “Writing has declined from 36% of all usage in July 2024 to 24% a year later. Seeking Information has grown from 14% to 24% of all usage over the same period.”

When it came to how people used ChatGPT for work purposes, researchers learned that 40% of the conversations were in the writing category, followed by practical guidance at 24%.

OpenAI praised the results, saying its AI chatbot has an evolving role in both productivity and value in people’s daily lives.

“A key way that value is created is through decision support: ChatGPT helps improve judgment and productivity, especially in knowledge-intensive jobs,” OpenAI claimed. “And as people discover these and other benefits, usage deepens—with user cohorts increasing their activity over time through improved models and new use-case discovery.”

The study excluded all conversations that users denied use in model training. Additionally, users who reported being under 18 years of age and had their accounts deleted, deactivated or banned were excluded from the study.

Study excluded dangers of ChatGPT

The study neglected coverage about dangers associated with the bot and reported incidents of conversations allegedly driving some people to die by suicide, consume harmful products and giving tips on how to get away with crimes, among other concerns.

In a teen’s death, ChatGPT was reported to discourage Adam Raine, 16, from speaking to his mom about his pain and validated Raine’s plans for suicide. When Raine brought up a noose, the chatbot made suggestions on upgrading it to a “safer load-bearing anchor loop.” Raine died on April 11.

The expansive use of ChatGPT and other similar artificial intelligence models has prompted some companies to build data centers. With the centers comes a demand for more energy use. The nation’s largest electric grid, PJM, projects that peak energy demands will increase by 42% in the next 15 years.
