POLITICS: Don’t buy any Zohran Mamdani ‘apology’ for smearing the NYPD

Zohran Mamdani’s liberal enablers are setting an obscenely low bar to help him escape his years of smearing the men and women of the New York Police Department.

He’ll say anything to get elected; once he wins, it won’t take a month before he’s back to his cop-hating ways (even if he covers it with his trademark grin).

And last week The New York Times did its best to help him pull it off, with softball queries about whether he was “sorry” for calling New York’s Finest “racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety” — then, when he said he was, if he would apologize.

“Yes,” the leading mayoral candidate replied . . . though he hasn’t even done that yet.

Mamdani, his campaign and the Times crew all clearly hope he can get away with a few words of regret, such as his sob-story about how he only tweeted the “racist” smear “at the height of frustration” in summer 2020 after  George Floyd’s killing in Minneapolis.

Sorry: Being furious at events in Minnesota never remotely justified him throwing repeated slurs (“white supremacist” was another) at the most professional, best-trained police force in the country, perhaps the world.

It wasn’t a momentary excess: Mamdani is a longtime anti-cop bigot — profiling all men and women in blue for his entire career.

Don’t believe a word of “regret” unless and until he walks through and owns up to all the ignorant biases and false assumptions he made in adopting his hateful attitudes

And calls out all his longtime allies who still push this nonsense.

His Democratic Socialists of America comrades (yes, in the New York chapter) were posting extreme anti-cop hate at least through last year, yet Mamdani had nothing to say about it until after winning the Democratic primary.

Cop-hating City Councilwoman Tiffany Cabán has long been one of his closest allies: Does he now disagree with her on this central issue? Or does he pretend he’s talked her around?

More, Mamdani needs to list and reject all the other errors his diseased thinking led him into, such as claiming that criminal violence is simply a “social construct.”

Simply waving off his past prejudices as not part of his campaign now barely even qualifies as a dodge: It barely even amounts to I don’t want to talk about it.

Every New Yorker should therefore read his true position as: “I still think cops are terrible but I’ve learned I can’t say it out loud.”

Nice talk like vowing that police will be “critical partners in delivering public safety” doesn’t even change the fact that his campaign still promises to leave the NYPD at its current, depressed headcount and to disband a key anticrime unit, the Strategic Response Group.

Plus, he boasts of plans to take resources away from the NYPD to fund his fantasy Department of Community Safety — staffed by cadres of social workers and mental-health workers.

“I believe an apology is in order,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said Friday of Mamdani’s stance here, but that’s just setting him up for an easy way out.

Beware: Any “moderate” who endorses him without him first making a full-fledged recantation of his grievous errors is simply trying to avoid facing down the extremists who have taken over the Democratic Party.
