If Western civilization is going to make it out of this century alive, it may come down to two men who, against all odds, joined forces to restore American greatness — then broke up spectacularly and now might just be getting back together.
I’m talking about Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
In my new book, “A Revolution of Common Sense,” I devote a chapter to the unlikely, combustible, wildly productive partnership the pair formed during Trump’s second term — specifically around DOGE, Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency.
Think of it as the Deep State Chainsaw Massacre, starring the most disruptive entrepreneur of the modern era.
When Musk served as Trump’s special adviser this year, he wasn’t subtle about his worldview.
As he told me for the book, “I want to save America from bankruptcy and defend Western civilization.”
That was not a throwaway line. Musk believes, sincerely, the future of the West — not just America — is on the line.
And he was willing to put his business, his fortune and his personal security at risk to fight for it.
And fight he did.
Inside the White House, Musk became the DOGE godfather — the man brought in to rip the bark off the federal bureaucracy.
In person, he is exactly as he appears online: stoic, direct, no handlers, “just an earnest guy in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building eating chips and sipping a Diet Coke,” as I wrote.
He told me, with zero drama, he expected to be threatened for the rest of his life because of his work. That’s the cost of challenging the most powerful inertia machine on Earth.
DOGE under Musk uncovered some of the most absurd government waste ever recorded.
The federal government had 4.6 million credit cards for 2.3 million employees.
The National Institutes of Health alone ran 700 IT systems with 27 chief information officers.
This wasn’t government — it was a parody of government.
Musk and Trump attacked it together.
In DOGE’s early months, the department had already saved taxpayers more than $160 billion, and Trump himself praised Musk at a Cabinet meeting: “You have really been a tremendous help, and you’ve opened a lot of eyes as to what can be done.”
Trump got it. Musk got it.
For a moment, the most powerful force in American politics and the most powerful force in American technology were pulling the rope in the same direction. And the West was better for it.
But if you’ve ever watched two alpha males share a room, you won’t be shocked by what came next: the spectacular falling out.
I lay out how Musk launched attacks on Trump’s “big beautiful bill” — the legislation that made the 2017 tax cuts permanent and deregulated American energy.
Trump blasted Musk as having gone “off the rails,” even calling him a “train wreck.”
Musk, in turn, launched a new political party.
Conservatives panicked. Liberals popped champagne. The alliance that once terrified the elite imploded in full view of the world.
But here’s the twist: For all the fireworks, Musk never abandoned the mission.
He told me flatly that “DOGE is going strong” and insisted America must defend “the future of Western civilization.”
And Trump, for all the frustration, never stopped respecting Musk’s capabilities or patriotism.
Which brings us to right now.
Musk appeared with Trump a few weeks ago at Charlie Kirk’s funeral — a moment rich with symbolism.
And days ago, Musk attended the state dinner for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, sending Washington into its usual panic when Musk dares show up in a tuxedo.
The day after the dinner, Elon tweeted appreciation for what President Trump is accomplishing.
The two men are clearly back in each other’s orbit.
In the end, differences of opinion are less important than the one unifying goal: saving Western civilization.
China is racing to overtake the United States on artificial intelligence, quantum computing and cyberwarfare.
Europe is drowning in bureaucracy and a mass-migration crisis of its own making. American elites are more interested in punishing free speech than preserving it.
Our institutions are exhausted. Our universities are broken.
And the Democratic Party has become deeply unserious and brazenly anti-American.
The West’s survival will require innovation, courage, disruption and a willingness to bulldoze failing systems.
Musk brings the innovation. Trump brings the political force. Together, they bring something the West desperately lacks: momentum.
In the DOGE chapter, I wrote: “Hard things could be done if we are willing to break the shackles of Washington’s usual prison of mediocrity.” That wasn’t about bureaucracy. It was about civilization.
The enemies of the West are organized. They are relentless. They are technologically aggressive. The champions of the West must be the same.
Trump and Musk don’t need to agree on everything. They don’t need to recreate their partnership blow-for-blow. But the West needs them in the same general fight, facing the same direction, recognizing the same stakes.
The American future — the Western future — is too important.
Call it reconciliation. Call it realignment. Call it destiny.
But whatever brought Musk and Trump into the same rooms again last week, it’s a sign.
The West’s two loudest defenders may be readying a reunion tour.
And frankly, Western civilization could use the encore.
