Hundreds of demonstrators gathered along Florida’s Tamiami Trail on Saturday to protest the construction of a new immigrant detention center in the Everglades, dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” by critics. The facility, proposed by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, is part of President Donald Trump’s bold initiative to expand deportations of criminal illegal aliens and secure the nation’s borders. While liberal activists and Native American leaders decry the project as an environmental and humanitarian crisis, supporters argue it is a necessary step to enforce immigration laws and protect American communities.

The protest, organized by Native American groups and environmental activists, claimed the detention center would encroach on sacred tribal lands and harm the fragile Everglades ecosystem. Ecologist Christopher McVoy, one of the demonstrators, told the Associated Press, “People I know are in tears, and I wasn’t far from it.” Meanwhile, left-wing organizations like the Center for Biological Diversity and Friends of the Everglades filed a lawsuit to halt construction, citing potential environmental damage. Attorney General Uthmeier defended the facility, telling Florida’s Voice, “Florida’s been leading on immigration enforcement, supporting the Trump administration and ICE efforts to detain and deport criminal aliens.” He emphasized the strategic advantage of the location—an abandoned airfield deep in the Everglades—stating, “People get out, there’s not much waiting for them other than alligators and pythons. Nowhere to go, nowhere to hide.”

The liberal media has framed the protests as a moral outcry, ignoring the fact that the facility is designed to house criminal aliens—those who have broken U.S. laws beyond just illegal entry. President Trump’s tough-on-immigration policies have successfully reduced illegal crossings and removed dangerous individuals from American streets. Yet, instead of applauding these efforts, the left continues to prioritize the demands of activists over the safety of citizens.

Protesters at the rally held signs and waved flags, with one woman in a viral clip pleading, “Find it in your hearts to pray for these people who are lost so that they can become human beings again.” While compassion is important, the rule of law must come first.
