From the left: Dems No-Risk Strategy Will Fail

After Kamala Harrisโ€™ defeat, The Atlanticโ€™s Marc Novicoff figured, โ€œsurely more Democrats would start coming out of the woodwork to advertise their moderate cultural views, and the idea of a radical Democratic Party would begin to fade away.โ€

But no: Even those who make the argument that โ€œthe party has weakened itself by being out of touchโ€ โ€œhavenโ€™t followed it to its natural conclusion by moving significantly rightward on any major issue.โ€

Most leading Dems โ€œseem focused on adjustments to the partyโ€™s communication style, rather than to its substantive positions.โ€

The โ€œfear of backlashโ€ from those espousing โ€œradical left-wing cultural viewsโ€ results in โ€œtactical silence.โ€

Sorry: Choosing a strategy that โ€œoffends no one and incurs little riskโ€ is โ€œunlikely to work.โ€

Culture critic: Kimmel Will Just Keep on Lying

โ€œJudging from his opening monologue,โ€ Jimmy Kimmel โ€œhas learned nothing about his own behavior, heโ€™s not sorry, and if anything, heโ€™s now emboldened to do it again,โ€ thunders National Reviewโ€™s Dan McLaughlin.

Yes, the late-night comedian โ€œhit a few good notes,โ€ like โ€œpraising Erika Kirk for forgiving her husbandโ€™s murderer.โ€

And he said he never meant to blame any โ€œspecific groupโ€ for the killerโ€™s actions.

Yet โ€œnowhere does he say the least bit to correct the lie he told his audience previouslyโ€ โ€” that โ€œthe shooter was not a MAGA right-winger.โ€

It seems โ€œsincerely recanting and apologizingโ€ was beyond โ€œKimmel. And now, he knows that he got away with it. Which makes it that much likelier that heโ€™ll do it again.โ€

From the right: The Conservative Counterculture

The โ€œnew American youth counterculture movement looks very different fromโ€ the 1960s, focusing on โ€œa renewal toward more traditional American values,โ€ marvels the Washington Examinerโ€™s Salena Zito.

โ€œEvery counterculture movement is a rebellion against the dominant cultureโ€; today, thatโ€™s the far-left ideology rampant in โ€œgovernment, institutions, technology, academia, corporations, Hollywood, and legacy media.โ€

โ€œWhat has been missing for many young people is a relationship with God,โ€ and thatโ€™s driving people in their 20s and 30s to โ€œreturn to church.โ€

Last Thursday, โ€œ600 college students showed up for a first-ever โ€˜Pitt for Jesusโ€™ event,โ€ at the University of Pittsburgh. Though such events โ€œare happening under the radar from the national press,โ€ the movement โ€œcentered on faith and purposeโ€ is very real.

Foreign desk: ExxonMobilโ€™s Russia Squeeze

โ€œExxonMobil made the right callโ€ by ending rumors it was โ€œin secret negotiations with Russian officialsโ€ about returning to the country, argues Edward Verona at The Hill.

ExxonMobil already โ€œhad to write off $4 billionโ€ after Russiaโ€™s invasion of Ukraine led to sanctions forcing the company to scrap its Sakhalin I project.

โ€œWhat would it have meant to go back to Russia?โ€ The United States โ€œwould have to lift sanctions.โ€

And even then, investors would be โ€œsubject to the whims of Vladimir Putin.โ€

Plus, โ€œcompanies rarely make capital-intensive, long-term investments on the strength of good relations between two political leaders, especially Trump and Putin.โ€

And consider the optics: โ€œIt was hard for the company to recover its reputation after the Exxon Valdez catastrophe. That was oil; now it is blood that is being spilled.โ€

Educator: The Secrets of Jewish Endurance

After the Six-Day War, recalls Eric Cohen at The Wall Street Journal, Jewish intellectual Milton Himmelfarb โ€œquipped: โ€˜The number of Jews in the world is smaller than a small statistical error in the Chinese census. Yet we remain bigger than our numbers.โ€™ โ€

Amid the โ€œstruggle for the Western soul,โ€ the National Endowment for the Humanities last week granted Cohenโ€™s organization, the Jewish educational center Tikvah, its largest gift ever.

The purpose: to respond to antisemitism โ€œwith the serious study of Jewish civilization.โ€

โ€œClassical Jewish textsโ€ focus on โ€œenduring truths,โ€ โ€œJewish ideas are central to the American character,โ€ and Jewish endurance โ€œis a sign of Jewish exceptionalism.โ€

Perhaps by studying โ€œJewish civilization, the U.S. will discover the secrets of ensuring our own national flourishing for millennia.โ€
