Crime beat: Dems’ Foolish DC-Policing Fury

“Democrats in Washington, D.C., are furious — not because violent crime was spiraling out of control, but because President Donald Trump did something to stop it,” marvels the Federalist’s Brianna Lyman. A Washington Post poll shows roughly 80% of residents oppose Trump sending in the National Guard, but more than 70% of those polled are Democrats, “whose reflex answer to anything involving Trump is always ‘wrong.’” Yet: “For the first time in years, D.C. just went seven straight days without a single homicide,” along with an 83% drop in carjackings, a 46% decline in robberies and overall 22% fall in crime. So much for the 65% of district residents a poll found “confidently declared that the deployment will not reduce violent crime in the city.”

From the right: ‘Watchdogs’ Pushing Propaganda

In citing “the unprecedented number of journalists killed” in the Israel-Hamas war watchdog groups “rely on an expansive definition of the word ‘journalist,’” observes Jamie Kirchik at The Wall Street Journal since “there is no independent media to speak of in Gaza,” “journalists operate at either the direct command or the mercy of Hamas and other terrorist groups.” Thus, on a listing of casualties from the Committee to Protect Journalists, nearly half openly “worked for media owned by or affiliated with terrorist organizations,” not to mention those employed by Al Jazeera, funded by Hamas’ main sponsor, Qatar. For instance, Israel accused accused Ismail al-Ghoul, of Al Jazeera, of participating in the Oct. 7 attack, and so it “killed him in a targeted air strike. in July 2024.” In short, “What’s being hyped as an unprecedented attack on journalists is actually a cynical salvo in an information war.”

Liberal: Identity Politics Would’ve Killed Hamilton

“One can’t help but wonder what the reaction would have been” if playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda “had tried to mount” his landmark musical “Hamilton” in “2020, when identity politics had taken over the Democratic Party, not to mention liberalism more generally,” muses The Free Press’ Joe Nocera.  “The multiracial cast was the reason a show that was so uncritical of our flawed Founding Fathers wound up being so universally praised,” but post-2020, “it is hard to imagine” it would be “embraced by the left,” which is now “demanding racial literalism.” Though “from a Trumpian point of view, Hamilton would seem to be a singing and dancing exercise in DEI,” in fact “the show has always transcended contemporary politics. Neither the progressive left nor the MAGA right can put a glove on it.”

Democrat: It’s Feeling Like 1988 Again

“If Democrats aren’t careful, we are about to relive one of the most painful and avoidable election outcomes for our party in modern American politics,” warns 2012 Obama campaign manager Jim Messina at Substack, pointing to 1988. That year, Dem nominee Mike Dukakis was up 17 points after the party’s convention —- but then “failed to drive home a compelling vision for the future”; eventually, “George H.W. Bush won in a relative landslide.” Today, “the notion that we can just be ‘anti-Trump’ or ‘anti-MAGA’ and ride a wave of discontent to victory in 2028 is a fantasy.” That means “a clear economic vision” from a leader who projects “strength, competence, and control” and isn’t painfully “culturally out of step” on basic values.

Media watch: Fired Hacks Now Shout into Void

“Deranged left-wing hacks masquerading as ‘mainstream’” journalists who lost their prestigious TV or print posts now “keep reminding us why they never deserved our respect,” snarks the Washington Free Beacon’s Andrew Stiles. For example, Jim Acosta, “that annoying guy at press conferences who wouldn’t shut up,” has fallen from CNN to a Substack page that offers paid access to “exclusive interviews with respected newsmakers” (hah!) “such as Molly Jong-Fast, Beto O’Rourke, Judd Legum, Lev Parnas, and Steve Schmidt.” “Stripped of their fancy titles and exorbitant salaries,” these once-esteemed frauds are no different than so many “other Trump-addled internet posters shrieking into the void.”
