Woke leftists who believe the U.S. has an endless supply of money remind me of old friends of mine.
As a couple, they would be considered well off, at least from the perspective of income. Yet, they wanted it all, and there wasn’t enough money coming in to pay for the trips, cars, McMansion, etc. So, they started borrowing, which worked out okay at the beginning, but by the time the house of cards was ready to collapse, they were taking out new loans just to make the payments on the old ones.
Since their income was robust, it never occurred to them they were actually broke until it was far too late.
Which brings me to the airplane Qatar wants to give the U.S. free of charge.
Apparently, the plane is pretty spectacular, and a significant upgrade over the two Boeing 737-200B models that have been in service since 1990. The 747-8 aircraft, valued at half a billion dollars, was part of the Qatar Amiri Flight fleet and owned by Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, the former Qatari prime minister. The jet features luxurious interiors, including multiple staterooms, lounges, and high-end furnishings. Designed by renowned French interior architect Alberto Pinto, the jet features a master suite, two full bathrooms with showers, a guest bedroom, five kitchens, a private office, nine additional lavatories, and five separate lounge areas across two large decks. The plush interiors are adorned with gold-accented furnishings.
So, you know this is something President Trump would like.
Unfortunately, inept Boeing, who received a contract for $3.8 billion in 2018 to build replacements for the current Air Force One planes, is significantly behind schedule. Originally committed to a 2024 delivery, the jets are now projected to arrive sometime between 2029-2035. As usual, Boeing blames the delays on bad luck, two 737 crashes, a door blowout, a machinist strike, turnover, supply chain disruptions during the pandemic, etc, but here is the good news, Boeing says the delays have nothing to do with DEI.
Uh huh.
The company now estimates it has lost $2.5 billion on the contract.
Woke Leftists Lose Their Minds Over the Gift
Thus, we circle back to my old friends and the parallel to the financial situation the U.S. finds itself in. As a country, we are broke. Why the American people have difficulty comprehending this is beyond me. Our national debt stands at $37 trillion and rising. Essentially, every new initiative is paid for with borrowed money. Quagmire in Ukraine? Borrowed money. Free money student loan giveaways? Borrowed money. Fake Green New Deal Inflation Reduction Act? Borrowed money. The loans come mostly from Japan and China, but a lot of people and countries own our debt.
So, when someone steps up and offers to give you a sorely needed state-of the-art jet liner so your president doesn’t look like he’s the leader of South Sudan, you take it, thank them profusely and laugh all the way to the bank.
Provisions in the Constitution that require Congressional approval for any gift from a “King, Prince, or foreign State” or the emoluments clause, which prohibits the president from accepting a gift beyond his salary, don’t apply in this case.
The way Trump structured the deal, the plane would be given to the U.S. Department of Defense, refurbished to U.S. standards, and put into service as Air Force One. The only benefit to President Trump would be the use of the jet, not ownership. Subsequently upon leaving office, the plane would be transferred to the Trump library.
Woke leftists claim this arrangement is illegal, but interestingly, they had no problem with Barack Obama accepting the $1.4 million that came with winning the Nobel Peace Prize.
Democrats Stay in Denial
Let’s remember, one of the two existing Air Force One jets is out of service. Considering the planes are over 30 years old, accepting the gift of a state-of-the-art aircraft that could fill the gap between now and whenever Boeing gets around to completing their languishing order is a complete no brainer.
Yet, here we are as usual. The same woke leftist crowd that firebombed Tesla dealerships to protect bloated government bureaucracies and fought with passion to keep violent illegal aliens in the country are demanding the U.S. turn down a $400 million gift.
We are broke. Repeat it to anyone who will listen. And when you’re broke, the old adage rings true: Beggers can’t be choosers.
