As the Democrats scramble to coalesce around a single platform, at least one ideological constant is emerging among its rising stars: an obsessive hatred of Israel.
You might blame it on Zohran Mandani, given that anti-Zionism was a powerful force behind his successful run for New York City mayor. But it can’t be laid entirely at his door. A fixation with the Jewish state is not merely common across the Left, but now appears to be downright mandatory, as young, progressive candidates seek to topple the old Democrat establishment.
Consider the incoming mayor of Seattle, Katie Wilson, who ran on a platform just as Left-wing and anti-Israel as Mamdani. Wilson, who has never previously held elected office, ran a campaign that was ostensibly focused on local affordability, yet was undergirded by condemnation of Israel and her supposed sympathy for the people of Gaza.
Gaza was facing a “genocide”, noted Wilson on X in August. And although she conceded she would have limited power to impact a conflict thousands of miles away, she promised to do “everything I can to end the suffering of Palestinians” if elected mayor.
Back in New York, city councilman Chi Osse has announced a bid to unseat House Minority leader Hakeem Jeffries from New York’s 8th congressional district. Osse is yet another Left-winger with an Ozempic-slim CV (sound familiar?) who is as big on bashing Israel as he is Donald Trump.
He branded Israel a terror state on X earlier this year, before adding “shame on every single person who is continuing to defend the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people”. Osse has repeatedly referred to Israel’s war in Gaza as “genocide”, a play ostensibly designed to undermine the pro-Israel Jeffries among radical Left-wing voters.
Also in New York is 25-year-old Cameron Kasky, a survivor of the 2018 Parkland School shooting who has since become a vocal anti-Trump podcaster. Kasky, who is Jewish, is running for the congressional seat held by Jerry Nadler, one of Washington’s most prominent Jewish politicians representing one of Manhattan’s most Jewish districts.
