President Donald Trump drew a lot of flak for renaming the Kennedy Center as The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center. To add fuel to the fire, he announced on a Truth Social post on February 2 that the venue will temporarily remain closed for two years.
Trump stated that after a year-long review with contractors, experts, and advisors, he has come to the conclusion that it is imperative to shut down the venue for two years. This will allow a proper renovation of Kennedy Center and help in its upgradation. The president stated that following the July 4 celebrations in 2026, the center will be closed for renovations.
“This important decision, based on input from many Highly Respected Experts, will take a tired, broken, and dilapidated Center, one that has been in bad condition, both financially and structurally for many years,” he added. The president claimed that American citizens will be “very proud of its new and beautiful Landmark for many generations to come.”
However, the Associated Press reported that skeptics viewed the board’s decision to rename the venue as controversial.
Since the rebranding, the venue has faced numerous cancellations of events featuring renowned names such as Béla Fleck, the Washington National Opera and Hamilton’s cast, among others. While Trump dubbed the renovations as strategic and important, some critics claimed that it was politically motivated.
An X user said, “Naming a national cultural institution after a 34-count felon is an embarrassment and a complete abuse of power.” Another wrote, “They didn’t rename a building — they branded a national institution like it’s merch. Culture is supposed to outlast presidents. This is power grabbing a stage and demanding applause.”
A third commented, “Stacking the board with loyalists to slap your name on a national treasure is peak authoritarian vanity, not leadership.”
Though Make America Great Again (MAGA) supporters praised Trump’s initiative, others described the move as downright bizarre.
Trump sued
Representative Joyce Beatty, a Democratic congresswoman and ex officio trustee of the Kennedy Center, has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to overturn the decision to rename the Kennedy Center. Filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the lawsuit challenges the move by the institution’s board, which Trump reportedly appointed himself, to add his name to the facility.
Beatty said, “Only Congress has the authority to rename the Kennedy Center. President Trump and his cronies must not be allowed to trample federal law and bypass Congress to feed his ego.”
The complaint specifically targets the procedural legitimacy of the board’s vote. While the White House claimed that the decision was unanimous, Beatty said that she was prevented from voicing opposition to a motion that was not originally on the agenda.
