POLITICS: Congrats to LA City Council on permit fees

It’s not final, and it shouldn’t have taken this long, but the decision Tuesday by the LA City Council’s Budget and Finance Committee to advance a proposal to waive all permit fees for victims of the Palisades Fire was the correct choice.

Now the full council has a chance to do the right thing at its next sitting, and pass the resolution.

It is wrong to force people to pay expensive permitting fees to rebuild their homes to a city that failed to save those homes because it didn’t pre-deploy firefighters or make sure there was enough water available.

Congratulations are especially due to Councilmember Traci Park, who has been a brave fighter for her constituents, from the fire zone to City Hall.

The council needs to do even more to help. Last year, Mayor Karen Bass promised to repeal Measure ULA, the so-called “mansion tax,” which applies to all buildings — not just homes — that sell for over about $5 million.

That effort fell short — because the city was late in starting a process of repeal in the state legislature.

There can be no more failures. The city — and the council — need to do more, and to do it now.
