The Chinese government declared its firm support for Nigeriaβs leadership Nov. 4 and warned against foreign interference in the countryβs internal affairs β just days after President Donald Trump threatened possible military action in Nigeria because of Christian persecution there.Β
At a press conference in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said that as a βcomprehensive strategic partner of Nigeria, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people to a development path that fits Nigeriaβs national realities.β
βWe oppose any countryβs interference in other countriesβ internal affairs under the pretext of religion and human rights,β she added, according to the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria. βWe oppose the wanton threat of sanction and use of force.β
Rep. Riley Moore, R-W.Va., a Catholic who has repeatedly highlighted anti-Christian violence in Nigeria, responded sharply to Beijingβs statement.Β
βPresident Trump is absolutely right to defend our brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering horrific persecution, and even martyrdom, for their faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,β Moore wrote. βChina will not dictate our foreign policy to us, and we will not be lectured to by a Communist autocracy that recently arrested 30 Christian pastors for their faith and throws ethnic minorities in concentration camps.βΒ
In October, the U.S. State Department condemned the Chinese Communist Party after reports emerged that authorities had detained about 30 Christian leaders across several major cities.
As CatholicVote previously reported, Trump announced Nov. 1 that he had instructed the Department of War βto prepare for possible actionβ if Nigeriaβs government does not stop the killings of Christians by radical Islamists. Trump had declared Nigeria a βCountry of Particular Concernβ the day before, and FOX News Channel reported Nov. 4 that Secretary of State Marco Rubio formally reinstated that designation.
