Conservative activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot while addressing a large crowd at Utah Valley University, sparking a sweeping manhunt for the armed suspect who remains on the run.
Authorities said the shooting occurred Wednesday afternoon at the university’s outdoor courtyard, leaving Kirk dead and law enforcement still urgently pursuing leads to identify the attacker, someone President Donald Trump has promised will face ultimate justice for killing a conservative icon he vows to officially honor, as Fox News reports.
The incident began around 12:20 p.m. local time when a gunman opened fire during Kirk’s event. The 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA was struck once and rushed to Timpanogos Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Description of suspect, escape route released
Witnesses and dispatch audio described the shooter as appearing college-aged and dressed entirely in black. Officials reported the individual was carrying a long firearm, wearing a tactical helmet, black mask, vest, and jeans.
Investigators said surveillance video tracked the suspect arriving at 11:52 a.m., moving through stairwells and onto a building roof overlooking the event. After firing the fatal shot, the individual fled across the roof, jumped off, and disappeared into a nearby neighborhood.
Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason confirmed authorities have good video of the movements, but noted the security camera quality is limited. He emphasized that investigators are canvassing neighborhoods, reviewing doorbell cameras, and speaking with witnesses.
Evidence recovered as probe continues
The FBI announced it has recovered what it believes is the weapon used: a high-powered bolt action rifle. The rifle was found in a wooded area along the suspect’s escape path and has been sent to a federal laboratory for analysis.
Law enforcement also gathered additional evidence, including a palm print, forearm impressions, and footwear marks. Officials stressed the case remains active and that further details cannot be disclosed to protect the investigation.
Two individuals were briefly detained for questioning but later released after police determined they had no connection to the shooting. Authorities reiterated that the suspect is still at large.
Event security, crowd reaction scrutinized
The university said approximately 3,000 people attended the outdoor gathering. Six campus police officers were assigned to provide security in addition to Kirk’s private detail.
The shooting triggered panic as the crowd fled the courtyard. Videos posted to social media showed attendees scrambling for cover while emergency personnel rushed to the scene.
Officials with the Utah Department of Public Safety described the event as a tragic moment for both the state and the nation. They stressed the investigation is being handled jointly by the FBI, state authorities, and local police.
Tributes pour in
Trump issued a statement calling Kirk’s killing a heinous act and announced the conservative commentator would posthumously receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The honor, he said, recognizes Kirk’s influence and advocacy for liberty.
“Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty and an inspiration to millions and millions of people,” Trump said. He added that his prayers are with Kirk’s wife, Erika, and their children.
The FBI urged anyone with photos, video, or information from the scene to come forward. Authorities emphasized that public assistance is crucial to identifying and apprehending the suspect responsible.
