I served in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division from December of 1967 until December of 1968. I was there for the TET Offensive by the Communist North Vietnam Army (NVA) and their terrorist allies the Viet Kong.
The Viet Cong (VC) was a communist-led military force and terrorist guerrilla organization that fought against the United States and South Vietnamese people during the Vietnam War.
My unit fought for 45 days to reach the West wall of the ancient city of Hue. The 1st Marines cleared the city and found 5,000 Vietnamese children, women and men in a mass grave with their hands bound behind their backs with barbed wire. They were all shot in the back of the head by the NVA and the Viet Kong.
One specific event is forever on my mind during my tour in Vietnam.
When we finally took the West wall of Hue the infantry company I was with as their forward observer, A Company, 2nd Battalion, 501 Infantry (Airborne), commandeered a two story home at the corner of the Perfume river and the mote that surrounds the city of Hue.
A few days after we took Hue I noticed a boat that docked at the home we are had set up our company command post. The boat had a young Vietnamese couple in it. The woman, with her husband, was pregnant. We took the couple in and fed them and made them comfortable.
The woman gave birth to a baby girl, delivered by our company medic.
After all of the death, destruction and violence, I witnessed a new life brought into this world. For me this was a message from God that life must go on.
