POLITICS: Blundering Tim Walz dragging down Harris campaign — while brilliant JD Vance helps Trump surge

As the latest polls Sunday showed Donald Trump and Kamala Harris neck and neck with just 23 days to go until the presidential election, Democratic spinmeisters are trying to calm the bedwetters, and Barack Obama has been dispatched to scold black men for not being impressed by his protégé.

But as uncomfortably close as this election is, one thing is certain: Tim Walz has to be the worst VP pick on record, in stark contrast to JD Vance.

If Harris loses, her self-indulgent decision to reject popular Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro in favor of a running mate even dumber than she is, will go down in the Democrats’ Hall of Fame as the worst own goal of all time.

What the choice of running mate tells you about each candidate is profound.

Trump’s choice of the brilliant Senator Vance tells you he is comfortable in his own skin, secure about his own achievements and not threatened by a younger, more articulate MAGA exemplar.

Vance pulled himself out of a chaotic Appalachian childhood plagued by poverty, domestic violence and drug abuse to attend Yale law school, find success in business and a happy marriage.

Since he was unveiled as Trump’s surprise VP pick, against the advice of most donors and advisers, he has hit the ground running and proven his worth in dozens of interviews pushing back on media lies with grace and deadly precision.

Vance’s ‘brilliance’

For instance, on Sunday, when ABC’s Martha Raddatz downplayed the violent takeover of residential buildings in Aurora, Colo., by armed illegal migrant gangs because “the incidents were limited to a handful of apartment complexes” Vance took her apart.

“Do you hear yourself?” he replied. “Only a handful of apartment complexes were taken over by Venezuelan gangs and Donald Trump is the problem and not Kamala Harris’ open border?”

Trump looks on his protégé with an avuncular pride, commenting to Fox News after Vance’s commanding performance in the VP debate earlier this month: “JD was fantastic . . . it just reconfirmed my choice. There was a brilliance to what he did.”

On the other hand, there is Walz.

In a few short weeks the Minnesota governor has amassed an impressive array of media flubs and downright scandals, from his “stolen valor” exaggeration of his reserve national guard career and peculiar lies about his Chinese Communist Party entanglements to his feeble boasts about being a red-blooded hunting man.

That last little vanity blew up over the weekend during a fake pheasant hunting photo op in his home state, when he didn’t know how to load his shotgun.

In embarrassing scenes, Walz strode around long grass in a high viz vest for the cameras calling for someone to bring him a “diet Mountain Dew” because he wanted to “pound it down.”

Then he became camera shy as he desperately fumbled with his weapon, sparking a torrent of criticism on social media where he was likened to Looney Tunes character Elmer Fudd.

It says a lot about Harris and her campaign that they think that creepy Walz’s Midwestern dad shtick and fake “aw shucks” humility will help win back the male vote that has deserted her.

‘Chemistry’

Her deep-seated insecurity, evident in every media appearance, is behind her fatal decision to choose Walz over Shapiro or eight other more impressive candidates.

The fact that Shapiro was Jewish reportedly counted against him because of the campaign’s desire to court pro-Hamas voters. But more important was the “chemistry” between Harris and Walz.

He was abjectly subservient and there was no chance he would outshine her with a superior intellect or mastery of the English language.

Harris also reportedly “loved” Walz’s far left governing record in Minnesota where he ran the state’s finances and education results into the ground, presided over a draconian COVID lockdown and an extreme abortion and woke social agenda.

Now she has reaped what she sowed as Walz has become a decided handicap on the campaign.

After various media flubs he was confined to his home state of Minnesota over the weekend. He was nowhere to be seen on the Sunday shows that Vance has made his own.

His media appearances are mainly exercises in self-harm, in which he tries to explain away his missteps by declaring himself a “knucklehead.”

The Democratic Party handmaidens of the media are still valiantly trying to portray him as an “everyman” and the epitome of plain talking conservative masculinity who proves that Harris is really a moderate. But he is just as phony as she is.

The other day, in California, Walz announced that he and Harris planned to abolish the Electoral College — which is no doubt true but caused great consternation in the campaign which does not want to scare off voters with their real agenda.

He tried to clean up the mess Friday with an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America” anchor Michael Strahan, the former Giants defensive end who was supposed to highlight “Coach Walz’s” football credibility.

But he was a flop even with the good-natured Strahan, who ended up nailing Walz more deftly than any political reporter.

“You call yourself a knucklehead because you’ve made some statements that just aren’t true,” Strahan said. “In a comment about ‘weapons of war that I carried in war,’ which you didn’t. You said you were in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square massacre, when you weren’t. You kind of chalked it up to bad grammar or getting the dates wrong. But your opponents say you lied to make yourself look better. Do they have a point?”

Walz ended up a blathering wreck delivering word salad worthy of his boss when trying to walk back the Electoral College blunder: “We’re out there making the case that the campaign’s position is clear, that that’s not their position.”

Parody

In what is shaping up to be an estrogen versus testosterone election, Harris has a decidedly low-T team, unless you count Liz Cheney, and her campaign is resorting to questionable ploys to woo male voters.

Last week saw the launch of a cringe-inducing new ad, “Men for Kamala,” featuring six supposedly manly men declaring, “I’m a man” and “I’m sure as s–t not afraid of . . . women.”

One claims to be so masculine that he eats “carburetors for breakfast.”

It seemed like a Babylon Bee parody. But it just showed how desperate Harris has become as the wheels fall off the world’s most embarrassing political campaign.
