Gavin Newsom was out being offensive again this week, demonstrating his familiarity with the soft bigotry of low expectations.

He is not only a failed governor who blew through a budget surplus, failed to deliver on his promise to eradicate homelessness, and allowed large portions of LA to burn down.

Newsom is also the same governor who confined his state’s citizens to their homes, closing their churches, gyms, and even their beaches and skate parks while he dined mask-free with elites at the French Laundry.

Instead of govrning, Newsom was out campaigning and promoting his new book, “Young Man in a Hurry,” in Atlanta last Sunday evening.

He appeared onstage with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, and tried to connect with black voters:

“You know, I’m not trying to impress you. I’m just trying to impress upon you: I’m like you. I’m no better than you. You know, I’m a 960 SAT guy,” he said.

He continued: “I can tell you; you’ve never seen me read a speech because I cannot read a speech. Maybe the wrong business to be in. I still have trouble reading. I have dyslexia — severe dyslexia. I’ve had it since I was a kid. But look, we all have our challenges, and we’ve overcome them.”

Everyone in that room should have walked out.

Newsom has called himself dumb in other speeches. Now he is spreading the inferior badge of honor around, to garner votes.

Everyone loves an underdog, but Gov. Gavin is not that. He hails from wealth and privilege, which is not a problem for voters unless it is a problem for him.

Newsom has continually failed up politics, and has never been held accountable for making the lives of Californians worse.

In a recent appearance on CNN, host Dana Bash attempted to confront Newsom on how unaffordable California is: “California has the highest cost of living in the nation; the state’s prices are 11 percent higher than the national average. We were actually out to dinner here in Nashville last night. We met a couple from California. They moved out of California because they couldn’t afford the rent or even to buy a home and also start a family.”

Newsom replied with platitudes about the size of California’s economy, and its manufacturing prowess, carrying on as before.

The backlash to Newsom’s comments was swift.

Former Harvard professor and one-time presidential candidate Cornel West responded in a podcast interview and on social media, “When he thinks of Black people, he thinks of lower SATs, that mindset sits at the core of white supremacy — the belief that Black people are less beautiful, less moral, less intelligent! Don’t play with us like that @CAgovernor.”

Newsom responded by doubling down, just as he always has.

In 2021, an attempt to recall him should have been a clear sign that his ideas had failed. Yet he survived that and was re-elected.

Now he aspires to the White House along with other Democrats such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and former Vice President Kamala Harris.

This trio should never have a chance at leading the free world, but they are the best that the Democrats are willing to offer.

Remember in the 2024 presidential primary, Democrats shook things up by moving South Carolina from the fourth to the first position, in recognition of the fact that black voters are a majority of the Democratic Party electorate there. It remains to be seen whether they keep that order intact.

Regardless, Newsom knows he must resonate with that voter base to establish himself as the early frontrunner.

His obsession with identifying with the unintelligent, and pointing at blacks while doing so, will not play well with black voters in any state.
