(RightWing.org) – Donald Trump clamped down on immigration during his first term by rescinding several of his predecessor’s programs like the Secure Communities initiative. That policy approach allowed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to use its discretion to terminate legal proceedings against asylum seekers. However, the Biden administration reimplemented the basic structure of the program, effectively green-lighting a mass amnesty for migrants otherwise ineligible for legal entry into the US.

On June 2, the New York Post published an alarming report detailing the impact of the Biden administration’s decision to roll back its approach to asylum seekers to the same one used (misused) by Barack Obama. The article cited figures related to immigration court proceedings published by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC), a nonpartisan data-gathering organization maintained by Syracuse University.

TRAC’s review of immigration court records revealed that government officials only deported 34% of the individuals seeking asylum and allowed 66% to remain in the US from FY 2014 through the first seven months of FY 2024 (October 2023 through April 2024). During Trump’s presidency, only 57% of asylum seekers were allowed to stay in the country. Under the Biden regime, that figure rose to 77%.

A close review of the numbers showed the shift between the last three administrations.

  • FY 2016 (Obama): 49,685 asylum applications received, resulting in 14,838 removals, 1,249 voluntary departures, 12,683 approvals by immigration court judges, 20,915 allowed to remain in the US by ICE decision to exercise prosecutorial discretion and close their cases.
  • FY 2017 (Obama/Trump): 50,748 applications, 22,580 removals, 2,101 voluntary departures, 14,631 approvals, 11,436 cases dropped.
  • FY 2018 (Trump): 60,382 applications, 33,244 removals, 3,843 voluntary departures, 17,958 approvals, 5,337 cases dropped.
  • FY 2019 (Trump): 87,018 applications, 52,223 removals, 5,940 voluntary departures, 24,108 approvals, 4,746 cases dropped.
  • FY 2020 (Trump): 76,407 applications, 48,361 removals, 3,607 voluntary departures, 19,709 approvals, 4,730 cases dropped.
  • FY 2021 (Trump/Biden): 51,585 applications, 17,999 removals, 1,694 voluntary departures, 13,773 approvals, 18,119 cases dropped.
  • FY 2022 (Biden): 173,227 applications, 36,250 removals, 2,568 voluntary departures, 31,859 approvals, 102,550 cases dropped.
  • FY 2023 (Biden): 248,232 applications, 52,440 removals, 3,374 voluntary departures, 43,113 approvals, 149,305 cases dropped.
  • FY 2024 (Biden): 175,193 applications, 33,349 removals, 1,487 voluntary departures, 26,514 approvals, 113,843 cases dropped.

If the current trends hold, the Biden administration will offer amnesty to 195,159 applicants and deport only 57,170 individuals seeking asylum out of 300,331.

Those figures also show another disturbing trend. The number of migrants seeking asylum rose 224.88% from Trump’s last year in office (FY 2020) to FY 2023. Likewise, that figure will rise another 20.99% in FY 2024.
