Americans currently in Iran have been urged to take immediate safety precautions after the U.S. government issued a fresh security alert, warning of heightened risks and severely limited options to leave the country. Entry into Turkmenistan requires special government authorization, while access to Azerbaijan remains largely restricted, with approvals granted only in limited cases. Officials further warned that these routes may involve delays and coordination challenges.

The alert further mentioned that U.S. nationals in Iran face significant risks, including questioning, arrest and detention. Authorities warned that even showing a U.S. passport or demonstrating ties to the U.S. could lead to detention. It also pointed out that Iran does not recognize dual nationality. U.S.-Iranian dual citizens are treated solely as Iranian nationals and must exit the country using Iranian documentation, potentially complicating departure efforts.
Limited diplomatic support for Americans in Iran
Because the U.S. does not maintain an embassy in Iran, assistance is handled through Switzerland’s embassy in Tehran, which represents U.S. interests. However, officials warned that support capacity may be limited due to internet disruptions and the security situation in Iran. Americans needing assistance have been directed to contact the U.S. Embassy in Bern, which oversees consular support for Iran.
