A Spanish teacher at Charles W. Baker High School in Baldwinsville, New York, was placed on paid administrative leave on Jan. 30, just weeks after agreeing to advise a student conservative club on campus.
Jennifer Fasulo, who teaches at the upstate New York school located in a suburb of Syracuse, had agreed to help students establish a Club America chapter at the school.
Club America is the high school division of Turning Point USA, the conservative organization co-founded by commentator Charlie Kirk.
The Baldwinsville Central School District confirmed the leave in a letter sent to parents on Feb. 10. “The district can confirm that a staff member has been placed on paid administrative leave while a matter is under review,” the letter read.
The district added that it was “following established administrative and legal procedures” and was unable to provide further details.
Students quickly rallied behind Fasulo, launching a petition demanding her return to the classroom.
The petition described Fasulo as a victim of spiritual and political discrimination and had gathered more than 2,100 signatures as of Thursday. “We believe no educator should be punished for their personal beliefs,” the petition stated.
At a Feb. 9 school board meeting, Club America President Jerry Dygert spoke out on Fasulo’s behalf. “This teacher is being targeted not because of her performance, but for her political beliefs,” Dygert said at the meeting.
“Our club exists to promote political understanding through civil discourse, removing the one teacher who best embodies those values puts that mission in serious jeopardy,” Dygert continued.
Students described Fasulo as more than a classroom teacher. “She extends her title as teacher and is considered a mentor. The wisdom and compassion that she gives to her students is unmatched,” one student said in her defense, according to the New York Post.
Not all community members have sided with Fasulo. Some parents have publicly called for action against her and the club she agreed to advise.
One parent described Turning Point USA as “terrifying” in a Facebook post, writing that “the extremist mindset tends to affect boys and young men the most.” That same parent called for discussion about the “potential termination” of Club America’s faculty advisor, per the Post.
Another parent wrote, “Organized hate groups have no place in our public schools. Would you want a KKK chapter, a neo nazi bund?”
The Post further noted that former Republican state Senate candidate Caleb Slater, who met Fasulo through church and Christian circles, has publicly taken up her cause.
Slater said Fasulo is being used as a sacrificial lamb to discourage conservative organizations and viewpoints at the school, which he noted has classrooms adorned with pride flags.
Slater emphasized that students, not parents or teachers, initiated the formation of Club America. “These are students who asked for this organization to be founded, not parents or teachers,” he said.
Syracuse.com reported that some community members have offered a separate explanation for Fasulo’s leave, claiming it had nothing to do with her involvement with Turning Point USA.
The outlet said that those individuals say the leave stemmed from an interaction Fasulo had with a student regarding sexual orientation.
An unnamed parent alleged that Fasulo questioned her daughter about her sexual orientation while advising a separate after-school Christian youth group called Youth Alive.
Those claims remain unsubstantiated
