Pentagon stands agency: No speak of scaling again U.S.-South Korean navy drills

Regardless of threats from North Korean chief Kim Jong-un to cancel a deliberate summit with President Trump set for subsequent month, the Pentagon on Thursday insisted there’s completely no dialogue of scaling again the joint U.S.-South Korean navy drills which have put that landmark assembly in jeopardy.

North Korea has blasted the joint workouts and mentioned they characterize an severe American provocation, although the U.S. has proven no willingness to postpone or scale back the drills in an effort to assist obtain a diplomatic breakthrough with Mr. Kim.

“There has been no talk of reducing anything. There has been no talk of changing our scope,” Pentagon spokesperson Dana White instructed reporters Thursday. “These are annual exercises. We’re very transparent about them. They are defensive in nature and the scope hasn’t changed.”

“This is about the alliance” with South Korea, she continued. “This is about safeguarding the alliance. This is about ensuring our readiness as an alliance.”

The annual joint workouts, often called “Max Thunder,” contain roughly 2,000 American troops, along with South Korean forces.

North Korea this week suspended ongoing talks with South Korea over its objections to the workouts.
