Multiple violent protesters were arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department after officers were forced to issue dispersal orders amid heated protests that erupted throughout the city.

The thousands of protesters gathered in front of City Hall on Friday, before marching half a mile to the Metropolitan Detention Center, swarming the area, destroying property, pushing a large dumpster, and blocking the entrance to the building’s loading dock.

“We had hoped that demonstrations today would be peaceful; however, as you can see in this video, the violent agitators invited LAPD intervention due to their actions,” the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) stated.

The department reported that an individual was arrested for using a slingshot to shoot metal projectiles at officers.

The protest organizers, led by the national grassroots organization 50501, claim the uprising is a response to a series of deaths of American civilians involving federal immigration agents, including the deadly shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minneapolis this month.

“The national day of action is about fighting back against the escalations that the Trump administration has taken against the American people over the past year,” said Hunter Dunn, a national press coordinator for 50501 and organizer in southern California. “Reports about the killings of Porter and Campos, the ones not captured on camera, and so many others have pierced the veil for many people who until now were unaware of how bad things had gotten.”

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass spoke during a news conference Friday evening, reporting that five arrests had been made for failure to disperse. Bass urged protesters rallying against the Trump administration to remain peaceful, saying violent unrest was counterproductive.

“I think the protests are extremely important, but it is equally important for these protests to be peaceful, for vandalism not to take place,” Bass said. “That does not impact the administration in any kind of way that is going to bring about any type of change.”

Bass claimed the administration wants these protests to take place, saying these uprisings are “exactly what I believe this administration wants to see happen.” She added, “Don’t be surprised if the military reenters our city.”

LAPD placed the city on tactical alert due to violent clashes, with some streets receiving a dispersal order, police ordering people to leave or be arrested.

Some protesters did flee the area, but those who remained continued to lob bottles and rocks at officers. The department reported that officers were being hit with “debris, bottles, and other objects.”

Bass also claimed the protests are tied to the recent arrest in the city of former CNN host Don Lemon, who was charged with conspiracy to deprive rights and violation of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act for his actions within the anti-ICE protests that disrupted service at a Minnesota church.

“Here you have a world-renowned reporter, Don Lemon. No one questions that he is a reporter, and for him to be arrested for doing his job and for them to attempt to restrict his ability to do his job was just an egregious misuse of our justice system,” she said. “And I think about this every day that this is the 250th year of our democracy, and I just wonder how much more our democracy will be eroded with this administration.”

Nationwide reports highlight that the events in Los Angeles were echoed in Minneapolis, where protests boiled over after the immigration enforcement-involved shootings, leading to over 50 arrests there alone and temporary shutdowns of local businesses in solidarity.
