A female lifeguard was impaled by an umbrella at a New Jersey beach.
Officials said the umbrella was impaled so deeply that it had to be cut into smaller pieces before transporting her to a hospital.
The horrifying incident happened at Asbury Park’s 3rd Avenue Beach.
“The umbrella went underneath her left shoulder and out the back,” Asbury Park Fire Chief Kevin Keddy told the New York Post.

Officials are looking into whether the woman may have been chasing an umbrella blowing in the wind and fallen on the stake.
Responders had to use a bandsaw to cut off the stake in order to fit the woman into an ambulance.
“We had to saw off the stake from the front and the back to make it more manageable. We bandaged her up and transported her to the hospital,” Kenny said.
The victim, who was conscious and alert throughout the incident, was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, Keddy said.
“When we dropped her off, she was conscious and alert and in good spirits — all things considered,” he added.
Injuries and deaths from umbrellas careening down beaches after they’ve been caught in the wind are not unheard of.

People reports:
John Bongiovanni, an Asbury Park beach safety supervisor, told the Asbury Park Press that lifeguards were setting up the beach, installing umbrellas in the lifeguard bench.
“As she was putting [the umbrella] in,” Bongiovanni said of the victim, “a gust of wind came up and started to pull it up. So as it pulled up, she reached to try to grab it, and when she grabbed it [to] pull it down.”
“I am assuming it tilted into the wind and blew it back at her,” Bongiovanni continued, “and it went through the adipose tissue on the lower part of her arm.”
The umbrella, which measured about 6 feet in length, had gone into the woman’s upper left shoulder and out through her back, said Asbury Park Fire Department Chief Kevin Keddy, WABC reported.
