The U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia was reportedly struck by two suspected Iranian drones, according to surfacing reports and U.S. officials. Loud explosions could be heard with smoke seen rising over Riyadh, the country’s capital.
Early Tuesday morning, residents of Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter — a heavily secured area that houses over 100 foreign embassies, diplomatic residences, and international missions — reported hearing multiple loud explosions followed by visible flames and thick black smoke rising into the pre-dawn sky.
The Saudi Defense Ministry confirmed the attack, saying the Embassy had “limited fire and minor material damages.”
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) later released a statement claiming the strike was part of its efforts to target “American political centers” in the region.
“The explosion at the Washington embassy in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, is a move in this direction,” the IRGC posted on Telegram.
The U.S. State Department also revealed to The Wall Street Journal that the embassy was “struck by two [Unmanned Aerial Vehicles] UAVs that hit the roof and the perimeter of the chancery.”
Authorities have not yet confirmed the extent of any damage or reported casualties.
