Two footballers collapsed on the pitch in a matter of days, adding to the significant rise in player collapses the past several years.

34-year-old Makhehlene Makhaula, a South African professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for South African Premier Division club Orlando Pirates, collapsed Saturday.

“World Football, unfortunately, has been subject to so many distressing scenes on the pitch over the last few years,” a commentator said.

Times LIVE reports:

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro said midfield strongman Makhehlene Makhaula is recovering in hospital after he collapsed during their 4-0 Nedbank Cup last-16 win over Hungry Lions on Saturday night.

After earning a single-goal lead against the Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit in the first half the Buccaneers strengthened in the second half to score three more goals and tame Lions. However the impressive win was overshadowed by Makhaula’s collapse, as he was stretchered off in the first half and replaced by Thalente Mbatha a minute into added time.

24-year-old Javier Altamirano, Chilean footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Argentine Primera División side Estudiantes de La Plata, and the Chile national football team, collapsed on the pitch Sunday and suffered a seizure.

From Daily Mail:

A Chilean footballer collapsed on the pitch after suffering a seizure during a match in Argentina on Sunday.

Estudiantes midfielder Javier Altamirano, 24, experienced convulsions in the 28th minute of their clash with Boca Juniors in La Plata.

Harrowing video footage shows the player’s legs visibly shaking as he is treated. Team-mates, some of whom were in tears, were seen rushing to his aid before he was treated by doctors from both sides and taken to hospital in an ambulance.

The Argentine League Cup game was then abandoned with the score 0-0 after the referee spoke to Estudiantes captain Jose Sosa and Boca Juniors counterpart Edinson Cavani.

Altamirano’s pregnant wife was in the stands and went with him to hospital, according to Estudiantes manager Eduardo Dominguez.
