The White House has chosen Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services Jim O’Neill to serve as acting director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The news follows the firing of Susan Monarez, who served in the role for about a month.

“Jim O’Neill’s extensive experience in Silicon Valley and government makes him ideally suited to transition HHS into a technological innovation powerhouse. He will help us harness cutting-edge AI, telemedicine, and other breakthrough technologies to deliver the highest quality medical care for Americans,” HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in June.

“As my deputy, he will lead innovation and help us reimagine how we serve the public. Together, we will promote outcome-centric medical care, champion radical transparency, uphold gold-standard science, and empower Americans to take charge of their own health,” he added.

CNN has more:

O’Neill joined HHS in June after years as a Silicon Valley-based technology and biotech investor, including stints with the Thiel Foundation and later the Thiel Fellowship, a grant program for young entrepreneurs started by billionaire Palantir founder Peter Thiel.

O’Neill also worked for HHS during the George W. Bush administration, when, as principal associate deputy secretary, he led changes to food regulation and emergency response.

The Washington Post first reported O’Neill’s new role.

He assumes the role amid turmoil for the CDC in the wake of Director Dr. Susan Monarez’s firing and a series of high-profile resignations this week.

Agency employees rallied outside the CDC’s Atlanta headquarters on Thursday to salute the departing Dr. Debra Houry, former chief medical officer; Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, former chief of vaccines and respiratory diseases; Dr. Daniel Jernigan, director of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases; and data chief Dr. Jennifer Layden.

“There’s a lot of trouble at CDC, and it’s going to require getting rid of some people,” RFK Jr. previously said.

“Anybody who lived through the COVID pandemic saw all these bizarre recommendations that were not science-based, all the misinformation,” he continued.

The health secretary also described how the CDC lists abortion, fluoridation, and vaccines as some of its top 10 greatest “medical accomplishments.”

The Guardian provided further info:

Monarez, who was confirmed by the Senate as CDC director less than a month ago, was viewed by agency staff and outside experts as someone who could potentially help moderate Kennedy’s anti-vaccine agenda.

O’Neill, unlike Monarez, has no training in medicine or infectious disease science. He is a former speechwriter for the health department, during the Bush years, who went on to work for the tech investor and conservative megadonor Peter Thiel.

During the Covid pandemic, O’Neill voiced public support for unproven treatments that were not supported by scientific evidence, including ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine, as well as vitamin D as a supposed “prophylaxis”.

He also posted a number of conspiratorial theories on social media, including the baseless claim that “the name #COVID was chosen to conceal the origin of the virus. This name made it harder to study and probably slowed the response.”

In the coming weeks, the CDC is scheduled to hold a meeting of its vaccine advisers and O’Neill is expected to play a key role. The process could lead to new, restrictive guidelines on which Americans will be allowed to receive updated Covid vaccines.
