President Trump and his administration are pulling out all the stops and nothing is off limits.
Including suing the City of New York.
The Justice Department filed a lawsuit Thursday against New York City, including Mayor Eric Adams, over the city’s sanctuary policies.
The Trump administration alleges the city’s policies interfere with the enforcement of federal immigration law.
“As detailed in the complaint, New York’s sanctuary policies have allowed dangerous criminals to roam the streets and commit heinous crimes within the community. These policies reflect an intentional effort to obstruct federal law enforcement and thus are preempted under the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution,” the Justice Department said in a press release.
“New York City has released thousands of criminals on the streets to commit violent crimes against law-abiding citizens due to sanctuary city policies,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi.
“If New York City won’t stand up for the safety of its citizens, we will,” she added.
The Department of Justice is suing New York City and Mayor Eric Adams for continuing to obstruct law enforcement with sanctuary city policies.

The legal action comes days after an off-duty customs agent was shot in the face during what police said was an attempted robbery in an Upper Manhattan park. Federal officials later said the two men arrested entered the country illegally and blamed the shooting on the city’s sanctuary policies. The lawsuit argues the shooting could have been prevented if the immigration policies weren’t in place.
The lawsuit represents escalating pressure on Adams, who has cultivated a close relationship with President Donald Trump and criticized aspects of the city’s immigration policies.
The mayor’s corruption indictment was dismissed in April at the direction of Trump’s Justice Department, amid allegations that he offered to assist federal officials with immigration enforcement in exchange for his charges being dismissed. Adams has denied the allegations.
Department of Justice officials said the lawsuit seeks to stop the nation’s largest city from impeding immigration enforcement.
“New York City has long been at the vanguard of interfering with enforcing this country’s immigration laws,” the lawsuit states. “Its history as a sanctuary city dates back to 1989, and its efforts to thwart federal immigration enforcement have only intensified since.”

“After years of seeking the repeal of New York City’s dangerous ‘sanctuary city laws,’ we asked Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Department of Justice this May to intervene to ensure federal authorities and our own law enforcement agencies could cooperate to keep New Yorkers safe. We are please they have listened and are moving forward with necessary legal action,” the NYC Council Common Sense Caucus said in a statement.

The Justice Department also argues that the city’s refusal to comply with the Department of Homeland Security “frequently puts ICE officers in considerable risk of physical danger,” citing several recent high-profile incidents involving federal immigration officials, including the shooting Sunday that left an off-duty Customs and Border Patrol agent in the hospital.
The complaint, which also named the New York City Council and the city Department of Correction as defendants, also cites data on Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer requests, which the Justice Department claims the city has not honored. New York’s suite of “sanctuary” policies date back to the 1980s and limit cooperation between federal immigrant agents and local law enforcement officers.
Adams’ press secretary Kayla Mamelak Altus said the city would review the lawsuit, but argued sanctuary city policies keep New Yorkers safe. “Mayor Adams has been clear: no one should be afraid to dial 911, send their kids to school, or go to the hospital, and no New Yorker should feel forced to hide in the shadows,” she said.
Adams supports the “essence” of sanctuary city laws, Mamelak Altus said, but “he has also been clear they go too far when it comes to dealing with those violent criminals on our streets and has urged the Council to reexamine them to ensure we can effectively work with the federal government to make our city safer. So far, the Council has refused.”
