Real ID Enforcement
The U.S. government will enforce the REAL ID Act starting May 7, 2025. This means domestic travelers aged 18 and over must present either a REAL ID or a valid passport to board flights or enter federal facilities. The REAL ID, indicated by a star in the upper-right corner, was created to enhance security against terrorism and identity fraud.
Easing this transition, all 50 states along with the District of Columbia comply with the REAL ID standards.
“We feel pressure. We are tremendously concerned about what happens next May, and that’s why we’re out there now a year ahead of time trying to convince people of the importance of getting this done before the last minute. Our facilities will swell up, and it will be a problem if people don’t get out and get their REAL ID’s.” – Alexi Giannoulias nbcchicago.com
Illinois is actively ensuring residents get their REAL IDs before the deadline. Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias expressed urgency over widespread last-minute applications. Required documents for a REAL ID include proof of identity, residency, and Social Security number.

International Travel Considerations
For U.S. citizens traveling to the UK from January 8, 2025, the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) will be mandatory. This authorization will be valid for two years, allowing multiple entries at a cost of £10 per application.
The European Union’s ETIAS requirement will begin in 2025, applicable to 30 European countries. This aims to enhance security by screening travelers from over 60 visa-exempt nations. Failure to secure an ETIAS could lead to disruptions at border crossings.
It is almost 2025 and that means the REAL ID will be needed at all airports to travel, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).https://t.co/rNR2EA1H27

Enhanced Consumer Protections
The U.S. Department of Transportation will enforce new consumer protections, effective from 2025. These include defined conditions for refunds and compensation for delayed baggage and services, ensuring airlines maintain transparency with passengers. Additionally, U.S. citizens can renew passports online, providing criteria are met.
“Earlier this year, new federal regulations took effect that require airlines to make it easier for ticketed passengers to get their money back after flight cancellations or other significant changes.” – Kelly McCarthy abcnews.go.com
These changes highlight the importance of staying informed to avoid travel disruptions. With the upcoming deadlines, travelers are advised to keep their identification current and double-check destination requirements well in advance of travel plans.
