A shouting match began on the House floor during a moment of silence for Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk after Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) called for a spoken prayer.

“An unbelievable moment on the House floor. Rep. Lauren Boebert requests a moment of prayer for Charlie Kirk,” Townhall wrote.

“Democrats can be heard shouting ‘no!’ Then, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna shouts back ‘y’all caused this!’” it added.

POLITICO has more:

With every lawmaker standing up in quiet observance, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) demanded a spoken prayer.

“Silent prayers get silent results,” she said, leading to jeers from Democrats, with some shouting about a school shooting that also happened Wednesday.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) stood up and started shouting expletives at the Democrats before Speaker Mike Johnson gaveled lawmakers down. Earlier Wednesday, she had posted on social media that she was “done with the rhetoric this rotten House and corrupt media has caused.”

“This is disgusting,” said a House Republican granted anonymity to react candidly to the clash.

“EVERY D*** ONE OF YOU WHO CALLED US FASCISTS DID THIS. You were too busy doping up kids, cutting off their genitals, inciting racial violence by supporting orgs that exploit minorities, protecting criminals, and stirring hate. YOU ARE THE HATE you claim to fight. Your words caused this. Your hate caused this. Charlie. His family. Those kids. No one deserved this. Enough is enough,” Luna said.

Axios shared comments from other lawmakers:

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), who worked as Kirk’s director of Hispanic engagement at Turning Point USA, then stood up and yelled at Democrats: “You caused this!”

That prompted a raucous Democratic response, with Rep. Jahana Hayes (D-Conn.), a leader on the gun violence prevention task force, shouting, “Pass some gun laws!”

The incident was a “reminder that we need to turn the temperature down in this country,” Rep. Susie Lee (D-Nev.) told Axios.

“Political violence is scary for all of us, and … that type of backlash doesn’t help things,” she said.

Rep. Dan Meuser (R-Pa.) told Axios the scene was “classless.”

“We had a couple on our side that should have kept their mouths shut…there were many on the Democrat side that needed to show their discontent and rudeness,” Meuser said.

One source of Democrats’ frustration was a belief that granting Boebert’s request for a prayer would have been a departure from standard House procedure.

House Administration Committee ranking member Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.) told Axios that saying a prayer on the House floor in response to a tragedy is something “we don’t even do for fallen members.”
