The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office began to investigate Elizabeth and Edward Stevenson through undercover drug buys.

Detectives issued a search warrant of the couple’s home on May 9th, where they discovered methamphetamine, fentanyl, firearms, ammunition and body armor.

Soon after the search, detectives received information that the couple was driving a semi-truck through Texas with illegal drugs purchased from a Mexican cartel and quickly alerted local authorities.

Once deputies from the Donley County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the Stevenson’s both tried to flee in the semi before exiting the vehicle and firing at police.

The shootout resulted in both of their deaths, and police noted that the Stevenson’s had previously said they would die by “suicide by cop.”

Upon searching the vehicle authorities seized about 64 pounds of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of $3.4 million.
