A Southwest Airlines pilot was arrested at a Georgia airport shortly before a flight’s takeoff for allegedly arriving to work intoxicated.

Authorities arrested David Allsop, 52, at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport around 7 a.m. on Wednesday.

He was charged with driving under the influence.

According to CBS News, airport police removed Allsop from the cockpit before flight 3772 to Chicago’s Midway Airport took off.

“The Employee has been removed from duty,” a Southwest Airlines spokesperson said, according to the outlet.

“Customers were accommodated on other flights and we apologize for the disruption to their travel plans. There’s nothing more important to Southwest than the Safety of our Employees and Customers,” the spokesperson added.

CBS News reports:

Allsop’s bail was set at $3,500, according to jail records, which also indicated he has been released on bond.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, “regulations prohibit pilots from using alcohol while on duty or from flying, or attempting to fly, an aircraft within 8 hours of consuming alcohol or if they have a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.04% or greater.”

Officials have not released information regarding Allsop’s breath or blood alcohol concentration.

“Any factor that impairs the pilot’s ability to perform the required tasks during the operation of an aircraft is an invitation for disaster,” according to the FAA. “The use of alcohol is a significant self-imposed stress factor that should be eliminated from the cockpit. The ability to do so is strictly within the pilot’s control.”

Per Fox News:

Allsop was apprehended just before Southwest Flight 3772, bound for Chicago, was about to leave Georgia. It departed shortly before 11 a.m., nearly four hours after it was scheduled to takeoff.

Southwest told Fox News Digital that it was looking into the incident and that Allsop, whose LinkedIn profile states that he is a pilot, has been “removed from duty.”

“We’re aware of a situation involving an Employee on Flight 3772 this morning from Savannah,” the airline said. “The employee has been removed from duty.”

Southwest also noted that the flight’s passengers were accommodated onto other flights while Flight 3772 remained grounded.
