(RightWing.org) – The armorer who supplied a loaded gun to Alec Baldwin on the set of the movie “Rust” says she wants the actor in jail. Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was jailed for involuntary manslaughter in March. Now she’s been named as a witness at Baldwin’s upcoming trial — and she won’t be aiming to help him.
On October 21, 2021, Baldwin was on the set of “Rust” in Bonanza City, New Mexico. As he rehearsed a gunfight scene, assistant director David Halls took a revolver from a prop cart then, without checking it, handed it to Baldwin and told him it was a “cold” — unloaded — gun. Baldwin, also without checking it, then pulled the trigger. The loaded .45-caliber pistol fired a live round, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.
Gutierrez-Reed was just 26 years old and on her second film as lead armorer. On the first, “The Old Way,” crew members complained about her unsafe weapon handling; on the set of “Rust,” actors had already accidentally fired blanks twice from “unloaded” guns provided by Gutierrez-Reed. Hutchins was killed by a round fired from a weapon that three people had failed to check. Gutierrez-Reed is now in prison and Halls — who also has a history of unsafe weapon handling — was given a suspended sentence for negligent use of a deadly weapon. Only Baldwin has escaped consequences so far.
For a while it looked as if he would escape completely; in April 2023 prosecutors dropped the manslaughter charges against him. However, six months later he was indicted again and is due to go on trial on July 9. Baldwin’s legal team has named Gutierrez-Reed as a witness, but special prosecutor Kari Morrissey is now objecting to that. She’s produced tapes of the armorer’s phone calls from prison, in which she said she wants Baldwin jailed. That makes her a potentially tainted witness — but there’s sitll a chance she could get her wish.
