Residents in New York and New Jersey reported feeling an earthquake Saturday evening.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed an earthquake hit northern New Jersey.

“The August 3, 2025 (August 2 local time), M 3.0 earthquake near Hasbrouk Heights, New Jersey, occurred as a result of faulting at shallow depths in the crust,” the USGS said.

“A magnitude 3.0 earthquake is reported to have occurred in or near New Jersey. Tremors may have been felt in parts of New York City. NYC Emergency Management is monitoring for impacts and coordinating with agency partners,” NYC Emergency Management wrote.

Patch has more:

Residents of Jersey City, Bergen, Morris, Essex counties and New York City took to social media on Saturday night to report they felt shaking.

“What was that that just shook the house in jersey city?” wrote a woman on X. “I’m on facetime with family and they felt it in Harrison and EO too…was it an earthquake?….wtf?”

Residents of New York City reported that they heard a boom, and in Westchester County, residents said they thought it was a train or a truck. It was also felt in western Connecticut.

There have been no reports of injury or damage thus far.

“A 3.0 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Hasbrouck Heights area,” wrote Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton on social media just before 11 p.m. “Please do not be alarmed — there are currently no reports of damage or injuries. We’ll share updates as more information becomes available.”

“The Bergen County borough is roughly 13 miles from Midtown, with tremors reported being felt in parts of Upper Manhattan, including Hell’s Kitchen, as well as Riverdale in The Bronx and even Staten Island,” the New York Post noted.

Some residents recalled the earthquake that struck the area last year.

Further info from the New York Post:

Earth-rattling was felt for as much as 10 seconds in parts of the Garden State, one person said, with shorter shakes also reported in Nutley, NJ, about nine miles south of Hasbrouck Heights.

“It sounded like a bang, followed by a shake and it lasted about two seconds,” Erica Pirchio, 40, who was in Nutley, told The Post.

“I have experienced two earthquakes in New York and New Jersey and this was the most violent — I never heard an earthquake before that sounded like a thud,” said Pirchio, adding, “I thought one of my parents fell.”

Folks on Staten Island also reported hearing a remarkably loud boom.

“It almost sounded like a car hit the side of the house, the house was swaying,” said Evan Ferrer, 33, who was watching a movie with his girlfriend at their home near South Beach at the time of the rattling.

“The one from 2024 was longer, but didn’t have a boom as extreme as this. It was a boom followed by swaying that lasted for a few seconds.”
