Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) said on a podcast sheβs open to the possibility of becoming an independent and caucusing with Democrats.
βIs there a world in which by becoming unaligned or an independent, you could help Alaskans that you consider it?β Galen Druke asked during an interview on his GD Politics podcast.
βThere may be that possibility,β Murkowski answered.
βThere is some openness to exploring something different than the status quo,β she later added.

From POLITICO:
Druke asked Murkowski how sheβd respond if Democrats won three seats in the 2026 midterm election, βand they say, weβre gonna let you pass bills that benefit Alaskans if you caucus with us.β
βYouβve started off with the right hook here, is βif this would help Alaskans,ββ she told Druke.
Murkowski has clashed with Trump several times since he returned to the White House, including accusing him of βwalking away from our alliesβ after the presidentβs February fight with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office. And in May, she criticized the administration for revoking the temporary protected status of Afghan immigrants, calling the move βa historic betrayal.β
In March, Murkowski told reporters her Republican colleagues were βafraidβ of going against Trump and then-ally Elon Musk, and said the pairβs work reducing the federal workforce through the Department of Government Efficiency was βtraumatizing people.β

Per Mediaite:
In numerous media interviews on Monday to promote her new book, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) entertained the possibility of bailing on the GOP. One of those interviews was conducted by former FiveThirtyEight podcaster Galen Druke on his GD Politics show. In it, Murkowski refused to quell speculation that she could jump ship, but did say she has fundamental disagreements with Democrats.
βChallenged as I think we may be on the Republican side, I donβt see the Democrats being much better,β Murkowski said. βTheyβve got not only their share of problems, but quite honestly, theyβve got some policies that I just inherently disagree with.β
So Druke followed up by asking whether Murkowski would consider going Independent β should the GOP lose three seats in the 2026 midterm elections, thus putting Democrats in control of the chamber.
βThere may be that possibility,β she said, adding, βThere is some openness to exploring something different than the status quo.β
In an interview with Semafor, Murkowski said, βHave I considered [switching parties]? Yes, because Iβve been asked the question.β
