West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey, a Republican, called for an investigation into the NCAA over the West Virginia men’s basketball team missing the tournament.

“I’ve asked Attorney General McCuskey to launch an investigation into the NCAA Tournament selection committee to determine if any backroom deals, corruption, bribes, or any nefarious activity occurred during the selection process,” Morrisey said.

“I know that the attorney general and I are going to leave no stone unturned during this process,” he added.

West Virginia finished the season 19-13 overall, with a 10-10 record in Big 12 Conference play.

The Mountaineers suffered an embarrassing 67-60 loss in their opening matchup of the Big 12 Tournament to last place Colorado.

Per ESPN:

West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey lashed out at the men’s NCAA tournament selection committee after the Mountaineers were among the teams snubbed, and he asked his attorney general to investigate and work closely with the NCAA to ensure that the process is transparent and fair.

“West Virginia deserved to be in the NCAA tournament,” Morrisey, standing at a lectern with a sign reading “National Corrupt Athletic Association,” said Monday in Charleston, West Virginia. “This was a miscarriage of justice and robbery at the highest levels.”

West Virginia (19-13) had six Quad 1 wins this season, but it lost its opening game in the Big 12 tournament to last-place Colorado. The Mountaineers played much of the season without the coach’s son, 6-foot-7 Tucker DeVries, who averaged 14.9 points and 4.9 rebounds in his eight starts before an upper-body injury that required surgery.

First-year Mountaineers coach Darian DeVries said the team was “extremely shocked, saddened and disappointed” with not making the tournament.

Bubba Cunningham, the North Carolina athletic director who is chairman of the NCAA tournament selection committee, referenced DeVries’ injury when talking about the first four teams left out.

The North Carolina Tar Heels were one of the last four teams placed into the NCAA Tournament.

Some critics said the Tar Heels didn’t deserve to be in the tournament.

Then the governor turned his attention to the Tar Heels, and went after North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham, who serves as the chair of the NCAA Tournament selection committee.

“Here’s something you may not know. UNC had representation in the room during the selection process. Let me repeat that, UNC had representation in the room during the selection process,” Morrisey exclaimed. “Bubba Cunningham is the athletic director for UNC. He also happens to be the head of the tournament selection committee.

“That’s being reported by a number of outlets that Cunningham had a significant bonus incentive, at least $70,000 to get into the tournament, arguably more if they advanced, with more incentives on the way. I want folks to let that sink in for just a minute… This stinks at the highest level.”

Clearly, the governor has been reading a lot about the contract of Bubba Cunningham, but it’s important to note that most athletic directors have incentives like this in their contracts. But clearly, the governor wanted to tie this in with North Carolina, which is a nice scare tactic for the outraged citizens.

What do Governor Patrick Morrisey and Attorney General JB McCuskey want out of this investigation?

“We want to make sure a travesty like this doesn’t happen again. But second, it’s important when issues like this come up that the NCAA has that full transparency when it comes to all the money, financial incentives, that’s available for the whole country to see. Because there is big money at stake. Also, I want to make sure I stand up for West Virginia, Marshall, and all the schools competing against the blue-bloods.”
