According toΒ Fox News, Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy is set to announce a 2028 Senate run, challenging Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).

Although the next Senate race in Alaska will be for Sen. Dan Sullivan’s seat, a source told the outlet that Dunleavy has no intention of quitting during his term.

Murkowski is noted for having numerous clashes with President Trump.

β€œI certainly can’t get behind Donald Trump,” Murkowski said last year.

Fox News shared additional details:

Dunleavy β€œcares deeply about and wants Alaska to succeed,” the source said, adding the governor recently quipped that he can’t understand why people would want to β€œlive with all this concrete” in Washington and not in the verdant Arctic as one reason the Pennsylvania-born Republican likes to otherwise avoid the East Coast.

β€œBut he knows that (being in Washington) is the only way to get things done,” the source said, adding that Dunleavy was the second governor to endorse Trump in 2016 and that a top member of the White House staff said he visits more than any other governor despite a 3,500-mile trek.

β€œHe’s not about an ego and pushing himself in front of the cameras. He gets stuff done. … He’s not like, β€˜Please put me on this committee’ or β€˜I have to attend this ball’. He doesn’t like those types of things,” the source added.

β€œTrump has talked to him before about running and wants him to run.”

Dunleavy was notably present at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, when Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin Aug. 15.

Murkowski currently has not committed to running for re-election in 2028.

β€œWhat I’m trying to do is not win elections,” Murkowski told reporters earlier this month, according toΒ Alaska Public Media.

β€œI am just trying to do the best that I can for Alaskans,” she added.

She also has not ruled out running for governor.

Alaska Public Media has more:

When asked by a reporter Monday afternoon if she had considered adding her name to a long list of Republican candidates for the seat next year, she gave a short reply.

β€œSure,” she said. β€œLots of Republicans have.”

Associated Press reporter Becky Bohrer later asked Murkowski if she was being sincere.

β€œWas that a flippant response or a serious response?β€œ Bohrer asked. β€œIs that something that you’re seriously considering at this time?”

β€œWell it was a little bit flippant, I have to admit,” Murkowski said laughing, β€œbecause everybody asks me about it. So you know when you’re asked, you’re like, β€˜I don’t know. I was thinking about it.’”
