President Trump announced the Philadelphia Eagles would receive an invitation to visit the White House after the franchise’s victory in Super Bowl LIX.

“I thought it was a great performance by them,” Trump said.

Trump said the team would “absolutely” receive an invitation.

“They deserve to be down here, and we hope to see them,” he added.

Fox News reports:

Trump, in attendance for the game, predicted that the Kansas City Chiefs would win the Super Bowl for the third straight time, but instead it was a Philadelphia beatdown from the jump, earning a 40-22 victory over Kansas City to put a hold on their dynasty.

The day after the Super Bowl, veteran offensive lineman Lane Johnson said it would be a “team decision” to go. Johnson was a part of the Super Bowl LII team that had its invitation rescinded by Trump after some players refused to visit the White House due to Trump’s criticism of those who kneeled or raised their fists during the national anthem in protest of racial injustice and police brutality.

Trump released a statement at the time about his invitation cancellation, saying that “the 1,000 fans planning to attend the event deserve better.”

“They disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country,” Trump’s statement read seven years ago.

The Florida Panthers recently visited the president to celebrate their Stanley Cup victory last summer.

“White House source: the Philadelphia Eagles have not rejected a White House invite. The reports that have gone viral on social media are fake news. The White House has not even sent the official invite to the Eagles yet,” OutKick founder Clay Travis said.

Per CBS News:

On Monday, league sources told CBS News Philadelphia that the Eagles would attend the White House if they received an invitation.

Rumors of the Eagles declining an invitation to the White House swirled on social media over the weekend after a weeks-old post from The Sun gained traction online.

With a 40-22 win in Super Bowl LIX, the Birds prevented the Chiefs from becoming the first team to win three straight Super Bowls.

The Super Bowl win is the Eagles’ second in seven seasons. They’ve won two of three Super Bowl appearances since 2018. Before Super Bowl LII in 2018, Philadelphia had only been to the big game twice, losing in 1980 and 2005.

The last time the Eagles won the Super Bowl in 2018, Mr. Trump canceled their visit over a national anthem dispute.
