A U.S. Navy helicopter and fighter jet both crashed into the South China Sea within 30 minutes of each other this weekend.

The Navy’s Pacific Fleet said all crew members were safely rescued.

“On October 26, 2025 at approximately 2:45 p.m. local time, a U.S. Navy MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter, assigned to the ‘Battle Cats’ of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 73 went down in the waters of the South China Sea while conducting routine operations from the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68). Search and rescue assets assigned to Carrier Strike Group 11 safely recovered all three crew members,” the U.S. Pacific Fleet said in a statement.

“Following the incident, separately, at 3:15 p.m., an F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter assigned to the ‘Fighting Redcocks’ of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 22 also went down in the waters of the South China Sea while conducting routine operations from Nimitz. Both crew members successfully ejected and were also safely recovered by search and rescue assets assigned to Carrier Strike Group 11. All personnel involved are safe and in stable condition. The cause of both incidents is currently under investigation,” the statement continued.

More from the New York Post:

The USS Nimitz is returning to its home port in Naval Base Kitsap in Washington state after having been deployed to the Middle East for most of the summer as part of the US response to attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on commercial shipping.

The carrier is on its final deployment before decommissioning.

Another aircraft carrier, the USS Harry S. Truman, suffered a series of mishaps in recent months while deployed to the Middle East.

In December, the guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg mistakenly shot down an F/A-18 jet from the Truman.

Then, in April, another F/A-18 fighter jet slipped off the Truman’s hangar deck and fell into the Red Sea.

President Trump told reporters he does not suspect foul play.

Trump called the crashes “very unusual” and that it could be “bad fuel.”

Fox News shared further details:

Trump made the statement during a gaggle with reporters aboard Air Force One, saying he expected to get answers regarding the crashes soon. One possibility he’d been given was that the planes had faulty fuel, the president said.

“You’ve been briefed on the incident, on the Nimitz, both a fighter jet and a helicopter?” a reporter asked.

“I’ve heard about it, yeah,” Trump responded.

“Do you know what happened there? What was that?” the reporter asked.

“They’re going to let me know pretty soon. I think they should be able to find out. It could be bad fuel. I mean, it’s possible it’s bad fuel. Very unusual that that would happen,” Trump said.

“You don’t think it was foul play or anything?” the reporter pressed.

“No, I don’t,” Trump replied. “They think it might be bad fuel.”
