Rescue crews are searching for an airplane in Alaska that was reported missing on Thursday.

“At this time Emergency crews in Nome, Alaska, are urgently searching for a missing aircraft. The Bering Air Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX, registration number N321BA, carrying 10 passengers, departed from Unalakleet, Alaska, on a scheduled flight to Nome but disappeared en route. The aircraft last made contact shortly after takeoff before vanishing from radar,” Rawsalerts wrote.

“Search and rescue teams, including local authorities and the Alaska Air National Guard, have launched a coordinated ground and aerial search. Officials are urging residents in remote areas to report any signs of wreckage as efforts intensify,” the post added.

“The Bering Air Caravan, which is carrying nine passengers and a pilot, was reported overdue at 4 p.m. Thursday, troopers said in an online statement,” Anchorage Daily News stated.

Anchorage Daily News reports:

Clint Johnson, chief of the National Transportation Safety Board’s Alaska office, said the NTSB was aware of the overdue plane and monitoring the situation.

Search and rescue crews are working on getting the aircraft’s last known coordinates, troopers said.

The Nome Volunteer Fire Department also confirmed the overdue plane in a statement on its Facebook page, saying its personnel were conducting an active ground search between Nome and White Mountain. In a subsequent update, the fire department said search crews had covered ground from Nome to Topkok along the coast.

“Due to weather and visibility, we are limited on air search at the current time,” the fire department said in its statement.

The fire department asked the public not to form individual search parties at this time, “due to weather and safety concerns.” In addition to troopers, the National Guard and U.S. Coast Guard are also helping in the search, the fire department said.

Per Alaska’s News Source:

Norton Sound Health Corporation in Nome put out a notice at 5:25 p.m. that it was “ready to respond to a community medical emergency,” but did not give any other details.

An FAA weather camera located in Golovin, about 70 miles east of Nome, showed what appeared to be near-whiteout conditions over several hours Thursday afternoon.

The Nome volunteer department wrote on its social pages that families should seek support from Norton Sound.

“We ask the public to please think of those who may be missing at this time, but due to weather and safety concerns please do not form individual search parties,” the message read.

Nome volunteer department also wrote that the Coast Guard is scoping out the area, and the Air Force stationed at Elmendorf is sending flight support. The fire department said ground crews have covered the coast from Nome to Topkok.
