Waymo quietly recalled 1,200 self-driving vehicles last month due to faulty software causing them to crash into roadway barriers.
The autonomous ride-hailing service, owned by Google-parent Alphabet, launched its services in Los Angeles last year.
⚠️ Recall Alert
Waymo is recalling certain 5th Generation Automated Driving Systems (ADS) with software versions released prior to the November 7, 2024 software release.

From the Los Angeles Times:
The recall comes after a series of minor crashes with gates, chains and other obstacles in the road that did not result in any injuries, the Mountain View, Calif.-based company said in a filing with the NHTSA. The recall applies to 1,212 driverless vehicles operating on Waymo’s fifth-generation automated driving software.
Waymo released a software update to resolve the issue, and that update has already been rolled out in all affected vehicles, the recall notice said.
The company operates more than 1,500 vehicles across Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix and Austin. The recall does not affect any vehicles currently on the road, said Waymo spokesperson Ethan Teicher.
Waymo had to recall 1200 vehicles last month.

Waymo reportedly plans to expand to a dozen more cities.
However, some social media users have expressed complaints about the vehicles.
“Just saw my first Waymo. It came to a sudden stop to let a passenger out in an irrational place and almost caused a three car pileup. Then it just sat there for a few minutes blocking traffic, completely devoid of human life, spinning its stupid beach ball wheel on top like it was an antique Dell computer with a copy of Microsoft Office that hadn’t been updated in sixteen years,” one X user commented.
“these move fast and break everything disrupter Silicon Valley billionaire sociopaths. They’re killing jobs and making everything worse,” she added.

Per Reuters:
It plans to add service in Atlanta, Miami and Washington, D.C.
Waymo said it was aware of 16 collisions with chains, gates and other barriers between 2022 and late 2024. But the incidents did not result in any injuries, according to a report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
NHTSA opened an investigation into the performance of Waymo self-driving vehicles in May 2024 after reports of its robotaxis exhibiting driving behavior that potentially violated traffic safety laws.
The agency said several incidents under investigation “involved collisions with clearly visible objects that a competent driver would be expected to avoid.” The investigation remains open.
In related news, Tesla is reportedly preparing the launch of its driverless robotaxi service this month.
“For the past several days, Tesla has been testing self-driving Model Y cars (no one in driver’s seat) on Austin public streets with no incidents,” Elon Musk said last month.
“A month ahead of schedule. Next month, first self-delivery from factory to customer,” he added.

Prior reports noted that Musk said any such launch of the self-driving Model Y cars would start with 10 or 20 vehicles.
June 12th is reportedly Tesla’s internal deadline to launch the robotaxi service in Austin.
