A hockey fan is in critical condition after falling from the upper level of PPG Paints Arena during the Pittsburgh Penguins’ game against the St. Louis Blues on Monday.

“At approximately 7:15 p.m., the Pittsburgh Bureau of EMS and Pittsburgh Bureau of Police working a detail at PPG Paints Arena were alerted by security staff that an individual had fallen from the upper concourse into the lower concourse. According to initial reports, an adult male fell from the 200 level of the arena. During the fall, he struck another individual located in the suite level below before continuing to fall to the 100 level,” the Pittsburgh Public Safety Department stated.

“Paramedics and PPG Paints personnel inside the arena responded immediately and located the critically injured patient. Pittsburgh EMS paramedics transported the patient to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries,” it added.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has more:

The incident happened after the Penguins scored their second goal 55 seconds into the first period of their 6-3 victory.

Fans said they saw the man in a Penguins jersey stumble down several stairs between sections 201 and 234 as he approached the bottom of the section before falling into and tumbling headfirst over the glass.

Pittsburgh police Cmdr. Jeff Abraham told the Post-Gazette the fan fell into the suite level and hit another person, who declined to be taken to the hospital. The fan then dropped another level into the walkway between the FNB Club and Section 122.

Pittsburgh EMS transported him to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A pane of glass just to the right of the bottom of the stairs in the section was missing and taped off after the incident. About 10 seats were roped off in the first two rows of Section 234.

“He was like, teetering a little bit, and then he fell forward. Somehow, he just kept sailing over the seats, and I think his head hit the Plexiglas, or safety glass, and shattered it,” another game attendee told local media, according to ABC News.

“The man who fell from the upper bowl @PPGPaintsArena at last nights @penguins game is a Beaver County native and 2008 graduate of Blackhawk High School. His name has not been officially released, so Channel 11 isn’t releasing it yet out of respect for his family,” WPXI reporter Andrew Havranek said.

ABC News noted:

Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fall, officials said, with the Penguins and OVG Management Group also “closely monitoring the situation.”

“Our concerns remain with the individual and his family at this time,” the Penguins said in a statement.

After the game, Penguins coach Dan Muse said his “thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”

“Obviously we all come here for a sport and a game and you hear something like that and that puts everything else aside,” Muse said on Monday night.

The status of the man’s condition as of Tuesday was not immediately clear.
