New Year’s Eve is a night for letting loose, gathering with others, and ringing in the new year with stunning firework shows.

But in big cities around the world, many celebrations are being canceled.

Meanwhile, in American cities like Chicago, authorities are warning that these types of crowded celebrations may be prime targets for terror attacks.

In fact, we’ve already seen multiple terror plots against our cities thwarted in recent days — the most recent in New Orleans, where they are increasing security and monitoring threats ahead of the holiday.

This clip from Fox News explained further:

NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTIES CANCELED IN MAJOR CITIES OVER TERROR THREATS

New Year’s Eve is supposed to be loud, fun, and packed with people. But this year? Cities are canceling the party because they’re scared it could turn into a war zone.

Chicago officials are warning that NYE events are now “attractive targets” for terrorists. Not because of anything specific, but because the setup is perfect for chaos: massive crowds, soft targets, no escape.

In New Orleans, things are worse. The FBI just stopped a bomb plot tied to an extremist group planning to hit ICE agents with pipe bombs and firearms. Their goal? “Take some of them out and scare the rest.”

The feds charged 4 suspects with trying to use weapons of mass destruction, supporting terrorists, and stockpiling illegal firearms. Yes, all for an NYE attack.

Meanwhile, other cities around the world – Paris, Tokyo, Sydney, Monaco – are also canceling fireworks and street parties. They say the risk is just too high.

So here we are. In a world where cities cancel parties out of fear, and law enforcement braces for explosions instead of fireworks.

In addition to the terror plot that the FBI halted in New Orleans, a similar plot was recently stopped in its tracks in Los Angeles.

Fox News has more:

The cancellations come as the FBI busted a New Year’s Eve bombing plot in Los Angeles earlier this week, arresting four alleged gang members.

The plot allegedly included a plan for coordinated bombing attacks using improvised explosive devices, meant to target five separate locations across the city, the FBI told Fox News Digital.

About a million people are expected to pack into Times Square in Manhattan for the famous New Year’s Eve ball drop.

Paul Mauro, a Fox News contributor and a former NYPD inspector, told Fox News Digital that New Year’s Eve is the biggest police detail probably in the country.

“New Year’s Eve is sort of the Super Bowl for the NYPD … You have to do everything you can to control that, not only for [terror] threats, but just for disorder,” said Mauro.

“You want to ensure that there aren’t people throwing bottles at each other and fighting, or somebody lets off firecrackers, or there’s a stampede.”

There is a ton of work that goes on behind the scenes in Times Square to secure the area, said Mauro.

He referenced planning “for weeks, if not months,” for New Year’s Eve just ahead of the year 2000. “You wouldn’t believe how many windows and rooms were secured by the NYPD, federal agencies and state agencies to make sure that there was a ring around Times Square,” he said.

Mauro said today’s celebrations have gotten a lot more sophisticated.

For those who plan on being in Times Square on New Year’s Eve, Mauro said it’s essential to have a contingency plan.

“If you’re with a group of people, or if you’ve brought your kids in or something like that, it’s easy to get separated in the crowd,” he said. “If that happens, you can’t necessarily rely on your mobile phones … Sometimes the cell circuits in and around Times Square on New Year’s Eve get overloaded.”

So far, none of the big New Year’s Eve celebrations — like the one in Times Square — have been canceled in the U.S.

Newsweek provided a list of all the countries that are canceling this year’s events:

Bali

The Denpasar City Government in Bali has canceled its firework display and concert for New Year’s Eve 2026, according to the outlet socialexpat.net, in order to show respect to those who have recently been impacted by natural disasters in the country.

However, it will still be running a number of cultural activities to celebrate the New Year, per the report.

Belgrade

Certain celebrations for New Year’s Eve and the Serbian New Year’s Eve on January 14 have been canceled in Belgrade after the Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Šapić said he did not want to put any children at risk during the musical concerts, according to local news outlet b92.

Earlier this month, at a press conference held at the Old Palace, the mayor said, per the outlet, that most of the attendees at the concert were girls aged 13 to 15, and that in previous years, people have tried to break through the barriers and “confront” concertgoers.

Hong Kong

The Hong Kong government has canceled its traditional firework display for New Year’s Eve this year and instead an alternative countdown event will be taking place, which it said would “convey positive energy, care and blessings of peace to both locals and visitors.”

While the government has not mentioned why the celebrations have changed, some local outlets have suggested it could be because of the recent Tai Po fire which tore through a number of high-rise buildings, killing at least 160 people.

Jakarta

The Jakarta Provincial Government confirmed the 2026 New Year’s Eve fireworks display was canceled on Friday, according to the outlet socialexpat.net, and Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo reportedly said this was to show empathy for “our brothers and sisters in Sumatra,” who were recently hit by a 6.6 magnitude earthquake.

The governor also reportedly said that there would still be some New Year celebrations, but that they would be modest to show respect.

Monaco

Monaco has introduced a number of new measures that will enforce strict rules on fireworks over New Year’s Eve, imposing a blanket ban on the transfer, possession, transport and use of fireworks and pyrotechnic devices throughout the state from noon on December 31, 2025, until noon on January 11, 2026, according to local news outlet news.mc.

Per the outlet, the decision was made due to concerns over public safety, fire risks and others, but there may still be firework displays happening on New Year’s Eve that are expressly authorized by the government.

Paris

In Paris, the concert planned for New Year’s Eve this year has been canceled, according to the local news outlet sortiraparis.com, which the outlet said was under the request of the Paris police prefecture over concerns with security.

The police reportedly asked the mayor to cancel the concert to reduce the risk of stampedes and unrest due to the huge crowds that typically attend the Champs-Elysées concert.

There will still be a firework display, though, so not all celebrations have been canceled.

Sydney

New Year’s Eve fireworks have been canceled in Sydney this year after the mass shooting on Bondi Beach. The display was set to draw 15,000 people to Bondi Beach.

Waverley Council confirmed the events were canceled, saying that: “Due to the current situation on the ground, Waverley Council has made the decision to cancel New Year’s Eve events at Bondi Beach, including elrow XXL Bondi and Local’s Lawn,” as reported by Sky News.

Per the outlet, the event promoter, Fuzzy, also said the decision was made in order to keep the focus on showing “compassion and care for Sydney’s Jewish community.”

Tokyo

The New Year’s Eve countdown event held in front of Shibuya Station in Tokyo has been canceled this year, after officials said that they were concerned about the large crowds gathering around the station, according to local news outlet Japan Today.

Per the outlet, Shibuya Mayor Ken Hasebe also voiced concerns about the possible ramifications of street drinking.

When cities have to cancel something as big as their annual New Year’s Eve celebrations out of fear of terrorism, something is very wrong.

It’s almost like importing millions of migrants isn’t working out how they thought it would…

What a sad reality.

Stay safe this New Year’s Eve everyone!
